I own a '66 4020 w/ MS carb. In the winter I have a terrible time trying to start this gal. I have installed a heavier starter to increase rpms. I have new AC plugs in it, new solid wires, points, condensor, had the head reworked, adjusted the valve lash, etc. I have timed it with a timing light at 20 d BTDC and vaccuum timed it, so I have the greatest vaccuum. I have rebuilt the MS carb and vaccuum adjusted it. My problem is winter starting. In the summer this tractor is a dream to cut, rake, bale hay with. It spends its fall, and spring duty pulling the fert. wagon and/or running the wet corn auger. When winter comes I would like to use it to pull the wood trailer with rather than the 4240 I have. How do I get this thing to start? It has a lower radiator hose heater element also. This tractor will crank and crank, puffing black smoke and just start to run then die. It will do this 5-6 times before it takes off. The only way to get the tractor to fire is to have it full choke and full throttle. I hate this on a cold engine. Is the zeinth carb a better carb ? worth the $$ ? I just tried to start the 4020 and it won't fire. I have spark so it must be the carb again. What do you who own these do to start them in winter ?

You may eliminate allot of your staring problems by making sure you do not have summer fuel in your tank. You should have fuel with a higher vapor pressure, in the area of 13psi compared to a summer fuel, which is about 9psi. Depending on your part of the country, the fuel suppliers automatically change this with the seasons.

My fuel distributor claims that they do switch. It just really is frustrating and confusing to me why it is only this 4020 that I have problems with in the winter. I have a bobcat w/ kohler engine that starts fine in the winter, my grain truck also starts fine in cold weather; both use the same gas. I am by no means a great mechanic. I understand the basics, and can trouble shoot most things. This particular tractor has been a problem for the entire time I have owned it. My local deere dealer claims deere never made a gas engine that was worth anything. They want to switch it over to a diesel. I do not have the $$ at this time. The tractor has only 3000 hrs and it never has done more than light duty, utility work.

honestly John I think it's a 4020 thing. I have a Zenith carb on my 66, and unless I have it on full choke, it will start up, and then stall out. I usually just use full choke full Idle position, and it will start up, run rough, and when I think it's got it's juices flowing good, I push the choke back in, and let it warm up good before I use it. Seems to work, and usually runs real smooth after a warm up. By the way I have electronic egnition on my tractor, which I feel has helped out a great deal, because prior to installing it, I had a heck of a time starting the fool thing in winter. So I Don't think your problems are caused by it having a M/S carb alone. By the way what type of heater are you using in your lower hose, and do they sell them at the Deer Dealership? Later Greg H.

I bought the lower hose heater at the auto parts store. I do not remember the brand namve. Deere does not call for a heater in their information. I would rather have had a tank type heater, but I was unable to get the hex plugs out of the head, and I was told that using the block drain cock hole for an inlet could result in a burned out tank if the coolant could not flow through it fast enough. Do not know if this is true or not. The hose heater is installed in hose by the govenor assembly. It does seem to help some.
