6v or 12v? How do I tell? (Other than looking at the battery!)

I just bought a 47 Minneapolis-Moline UTI. Yes, I know this is the John Deere forum but I know you guys pretty well because of my JD A and thought you might be able to help me with the M-M. The starter motor was reported to have been just re-built but didnt work for some reason. I had it tested and it was dead. I have ordered another rebuilt one. Here is my question. The tractor has a 12 volt battery in it. The guy I bought it from said it had been converted from 6v to 12v some time ago. He doesn't know any details--got it from his dad. It is also now hooked up to be negative ground. The generator charges but VERY little. It also looks to have a regular electric ignition.

How is a 6v system converted to 12v? I know the light bulbs have to be changed but other than that, what is done? How do I check the generator to see if it in fact is a 12v and not just a 6v? I need to get this done before the new starter comes in because Ill either have to get a 6v or a 12v solenoid. If a system is converted from 6v to 12v, do any of the ignition parts have to be changed? Coil? Points? Condenser? Thanks for your help. Jon.

I have a picture of this tractor up on my web site in addition to my JD A. Take a look.

Jon, if you decide to change everything to 12v,I can rebuild your generator and change it to 12v. John T. is correct but with changing reg. to 12v your gen. will charge at a low amperage.

I think most generators are positive ground.

Jon, if it were converted to 12 volt and the coil not changed, it should have had a ballast resistor added in series with the coil in the wire from the ignition switch to the coil + lead. That drops 6 volts leaving 6 for the coil and if it were changed from + to - ground, the power now goes to coil + while coil - goes to the distributor. If no ballast was added and youre usign 12 volts on a 6 volt coil, it will run hot and the points will burn out prematurely. You need a 12 volt solenoid now. I have used old 6 volt generatois on 12 volts by only changing to a 12 volt regulator, but I have no idea what you have going there. The points and condensor are merely series current switching/load absorbing devices and dont need to be changed provided that they are good. If it is hard to start you may want to add a starting by pass device across the ballast so the coil sees full 12 volts ONLY when the startign motor is cranking. Good luck Those old Twin Citys sure shine in tractor pulls. John T
