I was always given to understand that for tractors shipped on steel wheels, the 5th&6th gears, while technically "there", were locked out and that at a later time with the aide of some additional parts, could be enabled whenever rubber tires were installed on the tractor. Perhaps I am wrong on this. What I think you have is an aftermarket set of bolt on extra gears and I am hinking that perhaps such were made by Behlen? If this is what you have, it may be collectable but I have know idea how to tell you to get it working.

JD70Jim, the 5 - 6 trans that I described below is a Behlen aftermarket gear box. The tractor is a '38A, the box was added shortly after the War if I remember correctly. The R-1-2 trans has to be in neutral - the 5 or 6 is determined by the HiLo Range lever. One thing to remember, keep your fingers out of the way when you crank it, the gear box & the flywheel run kind of close. Phil

BD, can u provide more description of what's wrong? On the one that I used to drive, you had to pull up on the lever as you shifted it to the right (engaged). The main tranny (R-1-2) had to be in neutral to avoid getting locked into 2 gears at once. The Hi-Low lever could be in either position, Low = 5, Hi = 6.

The man that I got the tractor from said that it never worked. He bought it used. The handle dose go up and down about3/4 inch, but that dose not make any difference. Had the main tranny in neutral but nothing happends. Guess I'll have to open it up and take a looksee. Thanks for your input B D
