Just trys, but not quite. I have a sort of yellow orange spark at the points and lighter yellow at the plugs. Dont have a manual yet. This is a 12 volt conversion and I wonder if any of you could advise me on new points, condenser, and coil brand and part nu. would be good. I put in new plugs, any thing else?? Bob
p.s. Fuel has been checked out and is ok!

John T; This is the same unit you advised me on before, I have rebuilt the fuel system. I should have more of a blue color in the spark right? And I am still not sure if the system was correctly changed to 12 v. and neg. ground. any help or hints? any good web page on this subject? Thanks for your help (now and on 3-15). Bob

Bob, yes the spark should be more of a blue then that yellow/orange. If it was correctly converted from 6 to 12 volts using the same coil, there would have been a ballast resistor added in series between the high side of the coil and the ignition switch to drop 6 volts, allowing the remaining 6 across the coil. If its pos grnd as original, the coil - gets the power while the + goes to the distributor. (If - grnd, power to coil + and - to distributor) If a coil is wired wrong polarity, the spark is weaker. Also, if you only have half the coil voltage it was designed for, the spark is weaker. (Like if its wired with a messed up conversion using maybe a 12 volt coil but still ballasted) If it has a 6 volt coil and youre applying 12 and its not ballasted, the points will burn out prematurely and the coil will run too hot. So, you gotta see if its a 6 or 12 coil, see if its ballasted if a 6, see if the coil is wired right polarity first. You can get points and condensor right from JD or Tractor Supply, Big Blue, Rural King etc etc and I would go ahead and install new ones and I dont think their listings show any difference whatsoever regardless if 6 or 12 volt systems. They are a series current switching/absorbing device that dont have too much to do with voltage and 6 or 12 not much difference to them provided their withstand rating is high enough which it is. Try all that and maybe a fresh set of Autolite 386 or 388 plugs and see what happens. Ol John T
