Yesterday, we fired up the 40 and it came back to life with the first spin! What a wonderful sound that was to hear. We had been working on it for nearly 3months. This was one headache after another. We kept finding new problems to fix, waiting on parts to come in, and getting enough time on the weekends just to work on it.
The engine was completely rebuilt with all new pistons, rings, rods, bearings, etc. Also, put in new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, fork and linkage. The rear clutch linkage and assembly had to be replaced to eliminate slop. Also had a machine shop to build up the splines on the trans gear and build a new drive shaft. The radiator was recored and new wheel bearings put in. Replaced the distributor cap, rotor and points-condenser. We still have to replace the wiring, steering wheel+rod, and find a new intake-exhaust manifold.
The manifold is leaking around the rear exhaust port and it turns out that it is not even the correct one. JD dealer said it could be from an M or 320. There is enough gap to stick a knife blade through. Anyway, we are happy and thank the Lord for letting her run again!
Thanks to all for the help and advice!

Lee, glad to here you have it up & running, those 40-430s have a pleasing & unique sound as they have fairly high compression for their time.
