I have 720LP that is backfiring bad when going
down a hill. It starts easy and runs OK under a
load(although I don't think it has the power it
should have and uses more fuel)I does not backfire
under a load. My first thought was timing. The book says 20 deg BTDC at fast idle, it was running
about 3 deg BTDC, I adjusted to 20 but it backfired bad at fast idle, moved back to 15 deg BTDC and it seemed to run better. Did a little better under a load at 15,but still backfired.
I install new plugs and electronic ignition last
fall. Is there anything else I should check?

thanks
Don

Don, If you set the timing as the book said and it was worse on the backfiring. Then that should indicate the distributor is worn or has a lot of slack. Check it out real close. Did you replace the whole distributor when you put electronic ignition on the tractor? I would have said the condenser was bad but you said you had electronic ignition. The problem sounds to be in the ignition system

There does seem to be wear in the distributor,
I can move it back and forth a little bit. I also noticed that
with the timing light on the timing would change
about once every tenth time(it would show about
5 degrees difference 1 out of 10 flashes)
I wonder if the distibutor drive gear is worn
or could cam bearing be worn?

thanks don
