I drive my friends 1940 Model A (321cid)hand start in parades. Two problems. Seems the modern 87 octane gasoline does not vaporise well and leads to difficult starting. Magneto & carb in good condition. Starts a lot harder than I remember when I drove an unstyled A in the early 50s. We had thought of putting 100 LL avgas in the orginal gas tank and use it for starting. Any other ideas.
Second, it slings oil out on the flywheel side. Is there a cork seal? Does the crank have a slinger between the bearing and seal? Could a return hole be stopped up? Thanks

The slinger cover plate must also be centered on the slinger to keep it from leaking. Just use a feeler guage to get it positioned correctly. There is also a notch in the slinger that must line up with a key protruding from the flywheel.

Jim, not sure avgas will help as it probably has worse vaporization characteristics due to aircraft vapor lock problems. It could just be you are using old gasoline with the light ends evaporated out. Use fresh regular gasoline without alcohol from the season you are using the tractor in. You might try adjusting the idle screw a little richer to see if that will help. Stop the engine by shutting the fuel off & not by stalling it. You might try playing with the mag timing as sometimes that will help starting (I advance mine about 3/8" & that seems to help starting some, but try different settings as they are all different) For the oil leak "yes" it is probably the cork seal between the oil slinger & the crankshaft but could be plugged oil return holes. You can check them both when you pull the flywheel & slinger cover (mark the flywheel to crank before removal).
