I was thinking of buying a 3 bottom plow for my 1953 JD 70 gas. The problem is i dont know wheter it can handle a 3 btm. and if it can what size. Would i be better with a large 2 btm?

AJZ : Looks like you got some good advice online.
One thing, you've got an early production like
mine. Consider your rear tires. 15.5x38's don't
particularly like 14" bottoms. 14.9x38's fit in
the furrow better. If you have 15's, consider going with 3 x16's trailer type. I wouldn't push
more than a good 10' wheel disk with it without
dueling up, either. You can pull more but you'll
leave tracks even if you bury the disk to the hubs. Good hunting. Regards. poorerbutwiser..

We pulled a 3-14 with a John Deere 70 for years. They guy we bought it from pulled a 4 bottom plow on flat balck ground. On our farm we had a great deal of clay and hills so we could go better with the 3 bottom. Also we had 3 bottom plows that we had pulled with JD A's. Pulled it in 3rd gear as I remember. Third gear is fast on those old two lever shifters. It was well matched with a Farmall 450 diesel which was also a 4 bottom tractor but we pulled three. With the Farmall you would have to pull the TA, but the Deere would keep chugging through. Good luck - it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are plowing a garden then the 2 bottom will work just fine. If you have 200 acres to plow better step up to a 3 bottom, maybe 4 bottom in good soils.

AJZ-- Of course it depends on the soil, depth, etc, but the 70 was rated a full 4 bottom tractor. I use a 3x16 3 point hitch plow on my 70. I does very well in our loam soil. Trailer plows pull harder. I suspect the 70 would handle a 3x16 trailer plow or 4x14's in a 3 point hitch plow. I like to let my old tractor loaf a little in his old age, but 2 bottoms is a big waste behind a 70. Why not try to find a nice 3 bottom trailer plow (they do such a nice job), and go from there. Good luck.

I guess you're serious--yeah, a 70 can handle 3-16's in just about any conditions if it is in good shape. John Deere rated them a 4 plow tractor when they were selling them, except the all-fuel version which was 3-4 plow rated. A neat thing about those old tractors, they're pretty heavy for their size and will pull pretty good without tire loading or wheel weights. This ain't always so with other makes. Olivers, Masseys, Allis's are lighter and even Farmalls aren't as heavy in base weight.
