I bought and drove home a John Deere 70 diesel. I knew the owner (my dad) and knew the tractor had problems. Paid $400.00 for it - sort of a salvage value. Here is the problem. When you drive it you get specks of a black liquid/fluid all over your face, hands and clothes. I assume (actually know) coming from the exhaust. Drive it long enough and you begin to look like you have some disease. Also, the coolant does not look like coolant. Looks more like a mixture of crude oil and tar. It may actually want to spit some of the suff on the hood when you take off the radiator cap. I even remember taking a picture of the black stuff on the hood. He probably owned the tractor 35 years. It worked hard plowing, disking and picking corn for years. It never gave any problems and has never been worked on. Help ... what is wrong and where do I start. I just want it to work right again. Does not need to be perfect. Thanks

Had the same thing happen. Found Dad's old 70D standard years after he traded it & after couple of fools beat it up.Has almost 11,000 hrs. Initially we pulled just the head. The injectors were dirty & spraying at too low a pressure. We checked for cracks, replaced the valve guides/seals. If you can find a totally reconditioned late 720/730 head use it. The valves are larger & the injectors should have the latter six hole tips. New high tensile studs/nuts & hardened washers are required. After nearly 50 years of tension & corrosion the old ones are done. Drill a small 1/8 vent hole through a 180F or 195F thermostat body. The constant slight flow & venting of vapours will limit thermal shock while warming up under load. While rarely mentioned & thought of the metal mesh in the oil bath aircleaner will be restricting airflow. Totally disasemble it & boil out.Be prepared for just how much dirt will be inside. We measured the bore wear but time & $$$ delayed the total resoration for a couple of years. It ran much better after the head & injector job, smoked less & reduced the spitting of oil/fuel/soot. The total rebuild was required to eliminate the problem.

Thanks guys ... most of you think I probably have a head gasket problem ... which is probably the best situation to be in. And, maybe the injectors are not in specs. So, I should have the head gone through. Check in to new head bolts/studs. Put a new head gasket on. While I am there should I check the rings/pistons or just put the head back on? What about the mains and rod bearings? The old girl has 1000's of hours on her. Oh, do you think the head gaskets just sort of erode away by antifreeze, expanding and contracting, rather than actually blowing? That is what happens on the Ford 3.8 V6 engine. I have replaced them before. Gasket just wears out. Keep talking I am listening. andy

Since you'll have the head off, I'd go ahead and open up the crankcase and check bore/piston wear
and ring condition. And I'd look at the rod bearings as well. If you don't have access to a good set of micrometers, use readily available Plastigage to check bearing clearances. If your oil pressure has been good chances are you won't have a bearing problem but check the bearings for peace of mind. You'll sleep easier once you know everything is right at the bottom end.

ya better hope for a blown head gasket; cheapest and most likely culprit. Good luck
