Having problem with the ammeter. The generator is charging and has been checked out.It charged up the battery from almost flat but the ammeter didn't show as charging, but when the lights or the ignition for the pony motor was turned on it would show a discharge.Does this mean the ammeter is faulty? Thought i'd ask before buying a new one.

Shawn - Could be the ammeter is wired up wrong. If the wire from the ammeter to the regulator BAT terminal and and from the ammeter to the battery hot (not the battery ground) post are hooked to the same ammeter terminal, it will behave exactly as you describe. Suggest checking the wiring at the ammeter before you replace it.

The ammeter is simple to test. Disconnect it, then make a series circuit with the ammeter, a small load (a headlamp is good) and the battery. When you connect it up, the ammeter will read the load current, either positive or negative. Now reverse the two connections at the ammeter and power it up again - if you get a reading opposite from before, the ammeter is working fine.

Hope this helps. ...Bob M

Shawn, assuming a negative ground system. The plus side of meter stud terminal goes to bat term on alt or reg.
Also, all take off's for power to tractor also go on this same terminal. On the minus side of meter stud should only be one wire going to the positive side of battery.
For a positive ground system, reverse all of the above. That is all load taps and charge lead go on the minus side of meter.

Hope this helps,
