I just finished painting my john deere last saturday with a paint that my local Sherwin-Williams recommended and sold me which was a enamel paint with high solids, Looked good for 2 days and then we had a storm( the tractor is in my shop out of the weather) and the change in humidity the paint wrinkled up. I have taken the tractor back down and primed can any one tell me the best type paint to use with the best shine and well setup and cure faster. Thanks for any help.

Use the JD classic for antiques. I use a hardner in my paint. It dries faster, harder, and gives it a wet look. I do one coat of 2- part epoxy primer. It seals any rust you may have left behind. That buff color primer that has come on some parts I have got is garbage!!! With the hardner I only do three coats . E-Mail me for the products if you are interested. [email protected]

Antique green from JD. I used it on my A and it is perfect. Did not use hardner, JD paint man said not needed. Used JD primer and JD thinner and followed the instructions came with the paint. 3 primer coats, no sanding between, 4 green coats, no sanding and she has been fine for two years, shines like a new one! Ditto JD yellow.

Brian: I've painted a few tractors, (mostly green)
and I've had the best luck with standard John Deere paint-thinned per the directions-hardener
added-stirred, not shaken. Strained twice. Two
good primer coats and 4-5-6 top coats makes a good
shiny hard finish that makes decalling easy and
look great. Dad's '49 A looks as good today as
it did 5 years ago and it goes to the field !

I'm cheaper (poorer?) than the next guy but antique green from deere was only 2$ a quart more than from the auto parts store; and you know you've got the right color. As far as the wrinkling- did you use chemical strippers? Easy Off? And if so did you get it all completely washed off? Friend did a camaro years ago and had similar problem- he blamed the chemical strippers.

Hi,
sorry to hear about your previous luck. I agree with green envy about using john deere paint. Granted it is hard to get a run free finish, but if you take your time and do it right..THEY LOOK AWESOME! I do disagree with using classic green though. I used regular JD Green with hardener and it turned out great. I do not believe you can get a hardener that will work with the classic green and also i have heard that they have been changing the color of it also. Old John T saw my tractor ('37 short frame "B") at the elnora, IN show this year. Just buy regular JD green and some hardener. You will be VERY HAPPY with the results.

I wouldn't use any paint from any Sherwin Williams store or any other store whether they recommend it or not. We have found out that the best paint to use is the "antique green" paint from John Deere. Your John Deere dealer should be able to help on the paint. The paint will shine after about 4 or 5 coats. We usually put on 2 coats of primer and 4 to 5 coats of John Deere paint. I think John Deere tractors look their best only with John Deere paint.Hope this helps
