Well, I got one of the B's home, but had to winch it onto the trailer. They said it was running last fall when parked. The tank was empty so cleaned the sediment bowl and put in fresh gas, Would not start with a fresh battery, towed and ran so long as being pulled, even clutch out. Died as soon as tow vehicle stoped. I have new plugs, and checked the dist. (it is a 12 volt conversion). Should it be hooked up Neg. Ground? Thanks for any help, Bob

Bob, it came from the factory positive ground, but provided the coil is wired correct polarity??? the spark is as good one way or the other, but I prefer the original pos grnd set up. If it was converted to 12 volts but didnt have an ignition ballast resistor added or changed to a real 12 volt coil, it will burn points out quickly. When you say you checked the distributor, are the points set right and are they non corred and not pitted??? You have to first determine if its a fuel or ignition problem, but a dirty clogged carb or just a carb adjustment comes first to mind. Play with the carbs power and idle adjustments to see if that helps, and for no more than it costs, I would install new points and condensor (in addition to the new plugs you say you have) as a pre emptive shot also. It sounds minor, but over the net other than to tell you to try adjusting the carb and check the points and condensor, thats about it for now. Just installing new carb gaskets, unless you tear down the carb completely and remove all the brass drill plugs and bore out and clean all the teeny passages and remove and clean the nozzle etc., may not help much. Good Luck Ol John T

My B won't start after sitting a long time sometimes. I have found the plugs fouled. My engine was overhauled and don't smoke or anything. I just think it doesn't get run hard enough to get it cleared out so check the plugs.and happy pop poppin JIM

Bob,
I had the exact same problem with one I just bought (a '41). It turned out to be the carburetor. With help from this board and the guys at "Rummy's John Deere Bulletin Board", I was able to take the carb off, clean it and ream out the passages. There wasn't all that much to it. I wouldn't be surprised if that were your problem. Mine starts and runs fine now.
If you have never worked on one of these carbs before, be aware that there are passages that need to be cleaned that can easily be overlooked.
I bought a rebuild kit from my local John Deere dealer. It was a basic kit without needle valves (mostly gaskets) that cost about $35, but I think the cleaning was what it needed.
Good luck.
Gary
