Ken, you ask?..."should I be able to hear a little rattle, or clicking sound when at slow idle, under the valve cover"....To answer your question, YES... ~If you can't hear those valves there is a chance they�re too tight & burning.. ~Now if you have one that's louder than the others that is something else... ~Cole pretty well explained the problems with older worn valve train parts.. ~While you could just have normal MECHANICAL LIFTER valve noise you could also have a wear problem [normal on the old Deere�s].. ~Probably the place to start is to do your valve adjustment the old fashioned way� That is to bring the valve being adjusted to a closed position & the piston on that cylinder to TDC,, then loosen the valve adjusting nut & turn the adjusting screw until there is �O� lash [the push rod just lightly tightens up with �O� end play],,, then back the adjuster out 2 nut flats [or 1/3 turn]� That will leave the valve set about perfectly even if there is uneven wear on the rocker tips or other valve train parts.. ~If you still have a loud valve even after the above adjustment, then look for a worn cam or other excess valve train component wear� Usually the above adjustment is all it takes to at least get an even sounding valve train� [email protected]
