A fellow is selling a rather nicely restored 420 with adjustable wide front, five speed plus reverse, non spin out rears but adjustable with the extended axle, and two stage clutch. He's asking $3500. It has a two cylinder engine. I don't know much about JD's since I've looked at a lot of Fords lately. The price seems fair. Any pointers on what to look for in problem areas with this make? It has the straight steering setup but no power steering. Are there any other web sites that might detail the differences in this model tractor? Thanks for any feedback.

I had a 420w that had the 5-speed and live PTO that I restored and sold a year ago for $4800. I currently have a 430w that hasn't been restored (yet) and paid $3000 for that one a couple of years ago.

The value of any particular tractor is highly dependant on where you happen to be. I'm in the Raleigh, NC area, and small (30 hp sized) tractors are at a premium around here. It's not unusual to see worn out 1960 vintage machines going in the $8000 range.

Another way to approach this is to look at new machines in the same class, where they sell in the $20k range. Compared to that, $3500 is pretty good as long as the machine in question is running well.

These machines do have very good reliability. I have a 1958 420c crawler/dozer that was my dad's and that has worked pretty hard over the years. It's unrestored, but we've always kept proper maintenance on it. It's still a reliable running unit.

I also have an 'M' and a fairly new JD 4500. I wanted a machine with a loader, and decided that adding one to my 430w was a bit much for that machine (no power steering). I looked around for a year for a decent used late '60s to early '80s machine and found quite a few over-priced, over-used, and under-maintained 'pieces of junk'. I finally bit the bullet, and bought a brand-new machine, and I've been very happy that I did. However, if I had found a decent, used, loader-equipped unit, I'd have been happy with that as well.

Hope you make out well with whatever you wind up with.

Stan

I've got a 420S, 1957. It's got 3 point, power adjusting wheels, 5 spd, slanted steering wheel, IPTO, power steering, and new tires all around. I think it was near the last of the 420's before the new style rounded hood and slanted dash of the 430's. I've used it for about 10 years. I found that when you use the 3 pt, if the equipment is heavy you will need front weight or the front end will come up.

I have a 430 U (basically a 420 with a face lift). my uncle used it for years cleaning chicken houses and for everything else. It has a #35 quick tatch loader on it that I take off in the summer. It has been a great tractor, my uncle gave it very little maintenance and it still held up. With the loader it really needs power steering. when my uncle had it he never took the loader off. We irrigate here with corrigations so the front end got a lot of wear. With 3 point mounted stuff it should work great for ya. would put it up against a ford any day.
Mine has the 4 speed so don't know about 5 speds. the IPTO should be great.

I just bought a 420W last month for 3500. It is a 56 model 4 speed, supposed to be all green, but has the green and yellow paint. The tractor is not technicallly restored, but it will make a good parade tractor. It will earn its keep pulling a 6 foot finish mower. Hope this helps for comparison.

A 420 is a good collector tractor,but I wouldn't
want one to use.A lot of the parts are not
available, very expensive if you can find them.
Cost me 600.00 for one gear in the tranny of
my 420U and took a month to find one. There's
a lot better tractors to use that are a lot
more dependable.

The most common major complaint I remember hearing is the gears in the PTO failing from use of a brush hog without a soft shear pin or slip clutch. That is usually preventable by using a slip clutch or shear pin.

Sounds like a fair price to me, especially if it has been mechanically restored/checked and the tires are good. Of course, the wide front and independent PTO are nice features to have.

The fellow did a real nice job of it. I am going by his word that it is a two stage clutch since he didn't have a bush hog on it and the PTO spun even without being engaged until you grabbed it and then it stopped so it was hard to tell. I understand that the Fords can have a two stage clutch but they have to have a five speed. Is this a similar trait in that this 420 has to be a six speed as opposed to say a five speed in order to be a two stage clutch tractor? The fellow seems forthright and had five tractors to choose from but this was the only one with the two stage clutch that he mentioned. The others were just as nice and priced within $500 higher or lower. I was just thinking that this type PTO had an advantage over the others with what I need it for. Thanks L.C.

The 420 was offered with either a 4-speed (4 forward, 1 reverse) transmission or a 5-speed (5 forward, 1 reverse).

If I read correctly, the IPTO was offered only with the 5-speed transmission (but was not on all 5-speeds).

And yes, the two-stage clutch is a big advantage with a brush hog or other PTO-driven implement. I can personally tell of standing on the brakes wondering whether I could get stopped soon enough while operating a tractor without a two-stage clutch. I imagine others can tell more hair-raising stories!

To see if this is truly an independent PTO (IPTO), push the clutch all the way in and engage the PTO. Gradually release the clutch; if the PTO starts turning before the wheels start turning, the tractor has IPTO.

Follow up questions. Waht's the approximate horsepower for this tractor with the two cyl gas eng? Is it good for use with a bush hog and box blade? Thanks again for any insight on this model 420.

It's about 28-29 HP at the PTO. I'd say it would be pretty good for use with a box blade and bush hog. Rear wheel weights would probably be necessary to push much with a box blade.

As far as the bush hog, make sure you use a slip clutch or soft shear pin (see above post). A 5 foot bush/brush hog is about as large as the 420 will handle easily, but it could handle 6 feet in light mowing. Since this 420 has IPTO (some don't), an overrun coupler won't be necessary.
