60 head gasket???

I got my 60 gas head back from the machine shop and I'm ready to reinstall it. The IT shop manual calls for "Permatex" coating on the head gasket. The JD 60 tech manual says to soak in oil 5 sec. When I talked to a JD (modern)mechanic, he said to use the JD/Loctite product that looks like pipe dope(gasket dressing?). I have some HI-Tack red spray from NAPA (Permatex). What will work? What should I use? Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Bill

The origional studs are stretched after 46 or more years of service. Replace then & use high tensile nuts & hardened washers as well. Bolts/studs are really straight springs that keep the metal castings pressed together under a wide range of heat & pressure. Drill a 1/8 hole through the thermostat to allways let a little coolant and vapours through. Overheating during warmup occurs due to trapped pockets of vapour before the thermostat opens. Then the sudden cooling/thermal shock of the cold rad water hitting the engine when the thermostat does open will distort the castings & tear the gasket seal.

Does the 60 have the small bypass design as does the 50? My 50 is a late one (1955) and it has a small bypass pipe around the thermostat to do exactly the bypass function you mention by drilling the 1/8 hole.

Bill, late A and 60 head gaskets are especially hard to get to seal. I have used the Hi-Tack and Kopper Kote, and wasn't satisfied with either of them. I use #3 Permatex (liquid) on the outside vertical rails of the head gasket (both sides), then torque the head down in 10 lb. increments to 150 lbs. I have used this combination for years, and even used it on my 60 puller (with much higher compression) and it hasn't leaked a bit. Do not soak the gasket in oil. This procedure was used on a different type of gasket than is used now. Hope this helps. Mike

I use Copper Spray Gasket from NAPA. It's like a gold paint, but real sticky. I just spray a light even coat on both sides and set it in place. A can will last a long time. It helps the gasket seal between the 2 surfaces. Hope this helps. Bill {Antique Acres}
