We have a 3020 diesel with starter problems (draging). Every couple of years we rebuild it. What is the answer? 12volt? Are there any other startes that will fit on this tractor? Considering buying an extra. Thanks

I had or maybe still have the same problem with my 3020. After talking to many people. I decided to try and stay 24 Volt. The "experts" told me I had an inbalance in the Load of the two batteries and sure enough after inspecting the wiring harness I found where a previous owner wired all the electrical system except the starter and alternator to one side of the system. One battery was pulling hard on the system and the other was constantly being overcharged. I put a complete new wiring harne$$ on the tractor as I'm restoring it. We will see if this solves the problem.

I think thats the way it should be. WTW explained the 24 volt system in depth months ago. The tractor itself is 12 volt, poitive ground. Only the starter is 24 volt, and is isolated from th rest of the system. All the 12 volt stuff operates off of the right side. Maybe you could repost, as we're on page 2.

You might want to check all battery connections, and make sure both batteries are fully charged. I guess when you replace the bad battery, you should replace both. Not enough power is hard on starters.

Rick, Luke is right, just rebuilt a 3020D, and it has 24 volt starter on it, spins the heck out of the rebuilt motor, JD reman's are 235.00 exchange, don't say if that's 24 volt or not.
Mine is still running generator.
Good luck with your 3020, neat tractor but it's back to the 2 cyl's for me. Bob

go to 12 volt and alternator.
also use a nippendenzo (SP?) starter you can purchace from your local JD dealer. they cost a little more but will give you years of hassle free starting.
