2030 problems

I am working on a 2030 that has some hydraulic problems. It seems that the oil is getting hot, loses pressure and the hydraulics stop working. The tractor was in the shop a year or so ago and they found it to be a leaky steering system causing the heat buildup (after replacing many other parts along the way). After that repair, it worked better but the hydraulics are back to their old tricks again. But I also notice that the pump is working very hard. It can be noticed significantly on the engine at idle. Is this normal or is it possible that the closed center system pump is not controlling the pressure? Is it possible that it is keeping the pressure too high? Also what pressure should it maintain? Thanks in advance for any help.

Start the tractor cold and Feel the steering valve. As the tractor warms up the valve should not get "hot" It should not be over 100 degrees over out side temp.at any time . There is 6 o-rings inside the steering valve. If one was nicked on assembly it would take awhile to get bad enough to cause your problems. I would bet money that is your problem. A broken valve in the remote box could do this as well.

The 2030 uses a closed center system that only pumps oil when a valve is opened to operate a load. The rest of the time the system is idle ( not moving oil) but under full pressure. Sounds like that system if building heat by building pressure & forcing oil to flow somewhere continously. An opened center valve added to the system can also cause these symtoms. Keep us posted, this is a good mystery. 2350psi if my fading memory serves, latter tractors are up to 2800psi or so.

Does this tractor also have it's brakes quit working when this stuff happens? My 2440, which is mechanically the same tractor does this too. What are you using for hydraulic fluid? Have you checked the filter? Is the fluid milky? Do you ever connect this tractor's remote hydraulic system to a cylinder shared with an older tractor?
MY owners manual specifies LO VISCOSITY Hydraulic fluid. The older tractors use HY GARD, which is not compatible. Let me know please.

Jim, All of the hydraulics shut down including the brakes. It is due to the fluid overheating but I'm not sure exactly why it is getting so hot. We changed the fluid and filter the first time we noticed it happening and we put Hy-Tran back in it since it is a shared system with the transmission. Did the problem with yours go away when you used straight hydraulic fluid?

MS: That's exactly what happens. The fluid gets hot, you can nearly burn yourself on the casting around the steering column. Using the tractor for field work tends to overheat the hydraulic/transmission. We have a mounted 145 loader on it also. The steering starts to go, you can tell because it gets jerky and hard The brakes quit abruptly, and the remote hydraulics first operate slowly, and then just quit altogether. I suspect a slow hydraulic leak around one remote coupler but topping up with fluid does not cure immediately, You have to let the tractor sit and cool off. The dealer was no help. It does work better if you are careful to never let the tractor get wet, contaminated fluid is usually present when this happens, I don't see where rain water can get into the tranny but it seems to be a problem. I have not yet found a cure for the problem. When it is working, it is a good tractor. Also, my JD dealer said to use Low Viscosity oil, but the book says Hytran, I just checked, so I am now confused. I do know not to use cheap generic oil. Sorry about the long windy post. JD70jim

Did you ever get this problem solved. I have a 2030 that fails in the same manner. First scv then 3 point then brakes then stearing. I have rebuilt the scv, rockshaft flow control vavle..No change.Looking for next idea

A nieghbor had the same problem on his smaller JD tractor, he claims it is a metal hyd tube in the transmission going to the pto, it cracks and when the oil is heated up the warmer oil flows out the cracks. Have to split tractor and find cracked line by the transmission area. I have a 2030 that I am just going to tear apart to find my problem.
