Recently purchased a what i thought was a 4620 at an auction. It was advertised as such and 4620 decals were on it. It had an intercooled engine so I didn't think it was anything different until I checked the serial number which was 003816r. I think this is a 4520 with a 4620 engine. It also has the 4620 style air filter. Is this a common swap? And was this a common repower? thanks :-)

TB Last year Green mag did a story on the 4520.
There was problems with the air filter assy, to the point where they would catch fire, destroying the motor. Deere ,seeing a problem replaced them with upgraded 4620 motors. You are better off with the 4620.

I didn't know Deere had that program going that "WTW" explained. But it doesn't surprise me because they offered a kit to upgrade the 5010 after they introduced the 5020 and probably offered other kits as well. There are alot of 5010s and 5020s in my area that have aftermarket turbochargers or have the engine modified in some way to produce more hp. My neigbhor has a 5020 with a aftermarket turbocharger on the engine that puts out 150hp and our 5010 used to have a turbocharger but the engine overheated so many times that the prevouis owner took it out.

TB, Shortly after the introduction of the 4620, John Deere offered a program to 4520 owners to swap the engine and some accessories for 4620 engine and parts. This was not a update rather a upgrade that was offered to the owners of 4520's at a special price. The differences in appearances between the 4520 and the 4620 were the location of the injection pump (4520 had it in the 4020 location), 4620 had an intercooler like you mentioned where the 4520 didn't have an intercooler originally and the air-cleaners were different. The 4520 had two twin elements that laid side by side and the 4620 had one large diameter air-cleaner element. Both engines were 404 displacement. Other big pluses the replacement engine had over the other beside air-cleaner, intercooler and pump location was the type of injection pump. (4620 used a DB series four roller pump). Also the fuel injectors were different (the 4520 had pencil injectors where the 4620 had the large repairable KDL type. Hope this answers some questions. Enjoy your new/ old beast!! Good Luck Dave W.

the engine is the same except for a turbo and intercooler i believe. we have a 4620 for a loader tractor and are very satisfied with it. it is possible that someone took the intercooler off a blown 4620 and put it on your if you have a 4520.
