I have seen pictures and advertisements in John Deere books of 830s and 820s pulling 6 bottom moulboard plows. Not knowing much about on how hard moulboard plows pull, I was wondering, could an 830 or 820 really pull a 6 bottom plow? That seems like a huge load to pull when the tractor is only 69.5 drawbar hp. I farm 180 acres with an 1957 820 for my 4-H wheat growers project and I pull a 15ft chisel plow with a dead rod weeder and a 21ft JD disk in 3rd gear and the tractor gets along just fine with those loads.

Depends on the ground speed as well. A 20 HP tractor could pull a 6 bottom plow if weighted down & geared low enough.

The statement that a tractor will pull a 6 bottom plow is a typical sales pitch. It all depends on soil type, depth of cut, and sixe of bottom. Deere was famous for 14" bottoms, while most others used 16", and a few even 18's. For 6 bottoms, 2" narrower, that leaves the Deere plow covering 12" less than an ordinary plow. That almost makes up an extra bottom. That being said, I have an 820 that I pull a 5 bottom plow with. Our land is a clay-sand mixture that has its share or hard spots. I usually plow 8" deep, and the plow has 16" bottoms (its an IH plow). The 820 pulls it very well and I'm sure it could pull 6 14" bottoms also. I would doubt it would handle 6 16" bottoms at a reasonable speed. I pull the 5 in fourth gear. I also pull a three shank subsoiler 24" deep, in 2nd gear. The tractor has the power but the crust is so hard and unpredictable that deep that a slow speed is necessary. Also unless your tractor has been updated, it is the lower horsepower, same as an 80. Mine is a 1958 "black dash" and has the 'new' engine the has 69 drawbar hp.

Thanks for the replies and info. I don't know much about moldboard plows because up in my area they are almost ""OUTLAWED" because they bury the stubble which allows the wind to blow the soil away.
