Went to a sale saturday and saw a 72 4620 with new 18.4x38 inside tires, average axle duals, year-a-round cab, 6800 hours, good straight tin, three outlets, sell for $5,500. It ran great. whats your opinions ?????

The 4520 and 4620 had a 1,000 rpm PTO only. They did NOT have a 540 rpm PTO which alot of different equipment uses, such as haybines, balers, etc. I also looked at a 4520, but needed a 540 PTO, so I bought a 4020. Also, some of the older loaders won't fit a 4520 or 4620, but will fit a 4020 or 4320. Lastly, a tractor like the 4020 has an adjustable front axle for cultivating or other row crop work. Most of the 4520's, 4620's and 5020's do not. They have a fixed axle. Great for doing tillage work, but not very handy for row crops.

for some reason 4620 tractors always sell cheap, they seem pretty rare here. there are lots of 4020"s selling for 9-12,000 . but a 4620 will only bring 5-7,000. mabe people dont like them for some reason? another tractor that is always cheap is a 5020. i think the 4620&5020 are too big for weekend farmers so the demand is not there.

I have a theory about this. I think that there is a general price discrimination towards all of the higher hp tractors. A 4630 vs 4230 or better yet, a 4840 vs 4040 for example. I think that people tend to view these older tractors as being vastly more likely to have seen serious and heavy abuse. Because most have been turned up as they say and are used for the very heaviest loads, they are now regarded as much less reliable for even lighter duty as a backup tractor. Also, many smaller jobs can be more efficiently performed by smaller, handier tractors, the dinosaurs bring less than their smaller brethren.

It is not just true of JDs either, a Case 1370 brings very little compared to what say an 870 or 970 would bring. 1066s bring $6500 more often than not. About what a good 656 brings.

It is my feeling that the biggest new tractors are depreciating the fastest too, although I haven't done any real checking. Like I said, this is theory, so feel free to disagree.

thats the deal ive seen 1586 tractors sell for 4000 .the bigger older tractors sell cheap, normally worked hard. and here in texas a good clean 4040 will bring 10000+ more than a 46 or 48

Well, I basically agree with you but in this case this 1486 was one of the RARE (and I do mean RARE)exceptions of Red power, it was actually a pretty decent tractor. On the lot this tractor would have sold for over $12,000, but at the auction they ripped this poor old boy up.
