Hi fellas, A good friend of mine just purchased a 1973 4230. My friend isn't on the net so I'm trying to help him. Neither of us know much about Deeres. So here goes. He took it out to spread a load of manure and the tractor began smoking a little. Driving it back to the barn it began smoking worse, and when he reached the barn it really began knocking and smoking with very low oil pressure. He shut it down and changed the oil. Upon restarting it the knocking and smoking quit but still no oil pressure. Only ran it for about 2 minutes. I searched the archives and read that on some of these 4230's the cam and oil pump drive has failed. Is this a possibility? Any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Tony, If the camshaft did fail the tractor engine tachometer will not be working either. The tach gear is driven off the oil pump gear. Remove the tach cable or tach drive gear housing at the rear right hand corner of the engine behind the right side shield and see what is and isn't turning. If tractor has the original block it will have a frost plug that you can pop out to get a closer look with a flashlight at the gear teeth on the cam. The 73 through 75, 30 series 404 engines were more prone to do this than the later ones but with enough hours and lack of oil maintenance they will all do it. Good Luck, Dave Wickman
