I have asked this question on Rummys and got only one response and I need some clarifacation on this if possible.I have a "G"with the serial number(53891) and the guy I bought it from said it was a 51 as did A.T.I.S and even a book published by John Deere.I have a friend who had a card in his wallet and it says it is a 52 as did some other sources. Now I know that there is not any differences between the two but I want to be sure of the year model for my own piece of mind. Thanks Jack(TN).

Jack,
I am no expert at this, but if you look to the left of this discussion board you will see under "Research and Info" a blue link that says "serial numbers". If you click on that, then find "John Deere" then find your "G" and click on that you will find (according to THIS reference) that the starting serial number for the "G" in 1951 was 47194. You will find that the starting serial number for the year 1952 was 56510. It seems like your tractor must be a 1951, BASED ON THIS REFERENCE! Obviously the information is only as reliable as the source. I am thinking the only way you find an answer is to add up all the responses and see which year gets the most votes! I am getting a funny feeling that those cards that were passed out may have a few inaccuracies. If I were a betting man I'd say you had a '51, but '51 or '52, I bet it is still a lot of fun to own!
Have fun, let us know if you ever get this resolved to your satisfaction.

Your tractor is a 1951. The tractor SN's go from Nov. 1st to Nov.1st. The 1952 models started with 56510 on Nov. 1st of 1951. I have a 52 G that was built Nov. 14th of 1951. Its SN is G56920. I got this info from the John Deere archives. Hope this clears the disagreement for you! Don

No, the beginning and ending serial numbers didn't go from November 1 to October 31 of the next year---from the 1939 model year on, the model years ended when the factory closed down for inventory/vacation, and began when the factory reopened. This was usually done in late July or early August, but sometimes as early as June or as late as September. Many of the model year/serial number breaks that have been published are the result of people who did not know what they were looking at in the records, or did not realize when/how the model years changed. You can argue about it until the cows come home, but these are the FACTS. For Model "G" tractors, the 1952 model year ran from #53479-63137.

This is correct. What the argument essentially boils down to is a question of whether you are talking about the model year designation or the calendar year it was built. Some charts are based on model year, some on calendar year, and some mix the two.

If there is this much discussion regarding the exact "year", then it was probably built later in the calendar year with a model designation for the next year. Same idea as a 2001 car built in September 2000.

According to the wallet size reference card I received from the New York Expo Association, the starting serial number for a 52 G was 56510. I don't know where they got their information.

Jack, My book shows the 52 model "G" starting with serial number 53479 and ends with 63399. So I would say you have a 1952 model. Good chance that the tractor was manufactured in 1951 as the model year production began months before the actual fiscal year started. Will see what others have to say too. Dave W.
