NASCAR has confirmed that Dales lap belt broke, and he hit the steering wheel. I think all the drivers are great.

I must say that Richard Petty was a great driver. He won 200 races in his career and 7 winston cup championships. Dale only won 73 races and he also captured 7 winston cup championships. What does that tell you about his driving? He won when he needed to. When it was most important. How long was Richard Petty in NASCAR? A lot longer than Dale was. Petty chose to retire. Dale did not. Dale also did not buy his way into NASCAR as Junkman stated. Dale dropped out of school after 8th grade. Not the smartest decision but that was his choice. Now look at what he has done with his life. He was a true born racer just like Petty and Yarbourgh and the Waltrips. All he has known is racing and he was good at it. I agree he was a hot head but that was kind of the exciting part. You never knew what he would do next. I am not the most loyal fan of Dale but I am loyal to NASCAR and everyone involved. Dale will be missed and the sport will not be the same without him. Most people through their race experiences only get to see when he is bumping or nudging another driver. Did you ever care to see what he did behind the scenes? He was a caring man outside the racecar. Just look at football players. Do you see most of them being aggressive and tackleing people when not in uniform(remember I said most of them). No they dedicate their time to the United Way and other charitable organizations. Dale did the same think. Well that is my I guess you could say 50 cents worth. He was great like all of the others and everyone in the NASCAR community will greatly miss him!

Dodge, Before the race, I was heard to say "I'm really excited about Daytona this year! The only way it could be better is if Dale were driving a Dodge!" What a concept, NASCAR's greatest driver driving NASCAR's greatest car. Well, yes Dodge is back...but who cares anymore? Dale won't be back.
Kinda makes the whole season seem worthless. Love him or hate him, he WAS NASCAR, and only a stupid a--hole with less IQ than a blown tire would fail to recognize his talent.
But, that description doesn't even begin to get down to your level! To make a statement like you made is pretty much below any description. You are worse than what I stepped in crossing the front yard this morning. You are obviously stupid, uncouth and uncaring. Think of his family, and how yours will feel upon your departure when people say bad things about you, and I guarantee they will. I usually don't get involved in these stupid arguments on here about Deere vs IHC...but I draw the line! IF you are man enough not to hide behind your computer, please e-mail me with your address. I will gladly use some of the money slated for the two Pocono races and Watkins Glen, to fly to your location and kick your a--! I'd gladly use what's left over for bail and legal fees, because you are abviously a SPINELESS WHIMP, and would definately call the police rather than stand behind your words and take what's coming!
In years of work as a Police Officer, one of the things that bothers me most is when a good person dies, because there are about 100 bad ones you would gladly have sent in the good ones place! I volunteer YOU, go now so that we may have Dale back driving next week!

Hey, this is great! An officer of the law threatening someone he doesn't know, has never met face to face, about something so stupid as a racecar driver getting killed in an accident! That's just what this country is based on right? No more freedom of speech to voice our opinion right? Or else some out of control cop is going to come to your house and beat you up! Ha.....I wouldn't be too scared if I was you Dodge! Pete, If I was you I'd bee ashamed to call myself a cop! That's about as assinine of statement that I've heard in a long time. You are surely not above the law! I get a big kick out of 'tough cops' like you.....all show, big blow!

Sick, Yup, you are right about 1 thing, I got a little hot headed...didn't need to. Oops! Sorry!
But you still don't get it. America needs heros.
Usually they are a little more colorful than the average Joe; John Wayne, Stormin' Norman, Ronnie VanZant...and yes it is a loss when an average Joe passes, but the Heros always seem to hurt a little more. Dale was a reason for my family spending many a Sunday afternoon together, I'll miss that. I'll miss him. He wasn't a rule breaker, just willing to do what needed to be done. Yes sometimes the end does justify the means, like it or not. As far as my law enforcement career, it was 9 years long, but my desire ran out and my wallet needed a little more girth than tha career provided(antique tractors and trucks to restore), so I DO feel a little more free to express myself than I did for years. No apology. I wouldn't have been so hard on that individual had he been a little more respectful of a recently passed American Hero! I don't care if you liked him, just don't sound like you're happy that he's gone! I would never fight with someone who simply disliked him, but saying your happy that he is gone? Probably would have gotten that way if someone spoke ill of you after your death. As far as Dodge, if and when I regain some interest in racing, I'll be rooting for Dodge. Always been a Mopar fan, and Ward Burton and Sterlin Marlin had the BEST cars on Sunday! Was Dale a role model? I'd be proud to have kids like Dale; determined, driven, sucessful, and willing to do what has to be done. Would you rather have them emulate Eminem? Marilyn Manson? Bill Clinton?
Have fun with the R/T, it's a real American Classic...kinda like Dale! Pete

The sudden and tragic passing of of Dale hits the die-hard fans as well as the so-so fans of nascar. It seems most fans wanted to see him win or get beat by another racer, but everyone knew him by name and face. Gone but never forgotten,
wherever you may be, race on Dale.

It's not good to see anyone die, especially in an accident..... but to state that Earnhardt was the greatest driver ever is incorrect and a slap in the face to Richard Petty. Richard not only won more than 200 Winston Cup races (Dale only won 73), but was a TRUE good ole' boy that raced hard also, but acted civilized and showed excellent sportsmanship (which unfortunately Earnhardt did not much of the time). Flipping other drivers off and ramming into them is not 'just racin' and before Dale showed up would have not been tolerated by Nascar. Nascar really just sold out to the public by letting someone like Earnhardt get away with what he did. I get sick and tired of hearing all about "the intimidator" when there have been many other great race car drivers, including some young talented drivers that exhibit professoinalism and sprtsmanship and their deaths didn't hardly get 3 words mentioned. Maybe now Nascar can move up to a level of professionalism and sportsmanship that the sport and fans deserve!

Well, unfortunately just because someone such as myself drives a Dodge Cummins Diesel, 1968 Dodge Charger R/T, own a farm, and am very conservative, does not mean I am a follower of Dale Earnhardt. I just can't understand why there are so many people that think he was so great? I'm not glad he's dead, but I just think that there are alot of other people out there (some involved in racing, other that aren't) that die or are tragecally killed that got absolutley NO recognition for what they have done. Dale Earnhardt was a race driver, but essentially, he was an Entertainer. He may have been a good father and husband, but that's not uniqie to just him. There are many other popular people that also are too! I just think it's a tragedy that the American public basically 'worships' some guy that's a hothead, in-your-face, rule breaker! It's ok to want to win and to be good at your sport, but what does it teach kids when there 'hero' is breaking the rules of the sport and making obscene gestures and foul statements to his competetors. It kind of would seem that Dale really didn't have what it took to be a great athlete because even though he could drive (yes, I admitt he was a good driver...not the best, but good) he really didn't have the right attitude to go with it. When you're really the best at something, you don't have to act that way. Just look at Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Curt Warner, Ricahrd Petty, etc. I don't understand why people are taking this so personally either. I guess it just shows how few independent thinkers there are left in our country when the likes of Nascar can get a driver to "sell" to the public.

Good point about being a bit of a dirty driver compared to Petty. I see too many "Earnhardt's" out on the public roads where all people of all ages have a valid need to travel in safety and to hold Earnhardt up as a role model is asking for more deaths. May your child get killed from a "Earnhardt" type driver..?? I don't think so. Too bad he is dead but maybe that will save another "needless death" from a Dale wannbe. Harvey

Scott, I thought you were pretty cool, from your postings, but after those comments I am rethinking. It was tragic that Earnhart died at daytona, but to say he was the best is BS!!! Petty was there in the development of nascar, he didn't just buy his way in. However he is dead so lets let him be dead just like Elvis. The one nice thing about him being dead is that makes more air for me to breathe!!!

Junkman - Richard Petty was also a good driver. During his rein, he didn't have the competition level, technology or speed as now. Why wasn't NASCAR a "growing" sport during Petty's years, as it was during Dale's years? Perhaps because of the fans and what they wanted?

Now that we know how you feel about others leaving this world, perhaps you too have left your mark on life.

I think NASCAR was a growing sport when King Richard was in it. The technology was not there when he wasin it, but you certainly cannot think that Dale was the reason that NASCAR is what is today. Any sport takes many years to develop, Dale did not make NASCAR alone. Did Dale ever race on the sand? I think not, but NASCAR was developing then too!! Lets not give Dale more credit than what he deserves, good driver maybe, the best ever definitely not!!!
As for me making my mark on life, who cares? When I am dead, feed me to the worms!!!

jdeere70, it seems we agree on more than one thing, (I have a 70 too)! He was the greatest!
Many is the Sunday afternoon my brothers and father and I got together to watch the race, ie;see how Dale does. I didn't know him, although I shook his hand in the garage at Watkins Glen, but suprisingly his death really bothered me! I lost sleep, I shed a tear or two. Maybe it's because of the family gatherings he caused, maybe it's that something he had which I admired and strived for. He was a great driver, but you could tell he would have been great at whatever he set out to do. He will be missed. His pictur goes on my wall of fame along side Ronnie VanZant, John Wayne and a couple others.
We'll miss you Dale, and thanks for the memories.
A salute and a prayer. Pete
