I working on a '48 Model B, my first John Deere. Taking apart, cleaning, repairing and painting. The shift gate housing is causing me trouble. It's a big casting with limited access to the 50 years of grease and dirt built up inside. Anyone have any tricks for cleaning the inside of this casting. You experienced JD guys must have struggled with this before. Thanks for the help, Bill

Hi Bill--Welcome to the fun part of restoration. I'm not sure on a B since I've never done one but if it is a straight 6 trans, your (shift gate) will probably (top half) unbolt from the lower half, and remove for easy cleaning. I just use a long screw driver and dig. Get some gasoline and a parts cleaning brush and wet and dig and blow with with an air gun. Maybe someone else can give you/us some helpful hints. Don't give up!! luckydog

If you like explosions, sav and gauz, use gas and lots of it. Check with your local engine machine shop, and see how they clean their parts. If it unbolts and you can get it there, they will be glad to help you.
