Oil pressure in '34 JD A

I have a 34 "A" that shows no oil pressure on the original needle. I was wondering if there was a way to hook up (temporarily) a mechanical oil pressure gauge to see if I have adequate pressure. I have not messed with these old tractors much yet, but any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

i had a problem with my 35 A and instead of doing some half-assed hookup or drilling of the block (where did that one come from), i removed the oil pump cover and found the gears were all worn out. i contacted a parts connection and just bought a used oil pump complete. i stress the word 'complete' and mean the housing, gears, and cover should all be installed as a unit as the gears wear into the housing and shouldn't be interchanged into your old parts. the only thing to reuse is the cam gear inside the engine which will continue to wear as original because it is. be sure to use new gaskets if available or make your own. this is also a critical mistake made as the one i took apart had cereal box material for a gasket. (the things one finds when you buy a tractor right off the farm.) there is way too much oil blow-by near the cover which will result in low or no oil pressure if you don't use the correct gasket material and thickness. good luck.

You should be able to install a gage in the hole on the rear of the governor housing--the same hole that leads to the present gage. You may want to clean the hole out before you put the new gage in.

Zane, This is one of the old A's that doesn't really have a gauge, it has a plunger that gets pushed up by the oil pressure. Is there still a spot that I can hook up a gauge and check pressure?
Thanks,
John

One time I drilled a hole in the side of the block then threaded it so a newer oil pressure gauge would screw in. You can get any oil pressure gauge at NAPA or Auto Zone. My fav. parts store is Auto Zone.

Big Green, Thanks for your reply. I don't want to drill a hole though. I was more interested in just hooking a gauge up for diagnostic purposes.
