I was wondering if a 520 cam would work in a 50 and if the HP gain would be worth the change. My 50 is stock except for .090 over aluminum pistons.....any other tidbits on how to gain a few horses ?

If the memory is corect I've heard the 520 cam quoted as "bigger but the specs published by Two Cylinder club & JR Hobbs list them as identical. The 520/530's were treated to more compression, a 99 carb up from the 75 & sparkplugs in the head. A spirited little 39HP engine whose fuel efficiency is still outstanding. They were well souped from the factory a 350 car engine of the same output would make 160 HP at 5500 RPM. On the cheap, LP pistons, straight stack exhaust, oversize valves, blend the valve bowls out to match & have Albert at

Unfortunately I just put new .090 over aluminum pistons in my 50 a couple of years ago....hate to tear it down again. Are LP pistons still availabe? Can you run these in a gas tractor? What's the difference between these and high altitude pistons? Would it help me to plain the head for more compression? Thanks for you suggestions!

Yes,yes, more compression, would increase compression but hesitate to thin gasket mating surfaces & your welcome. The 50AF had a puny 5.35 to 1 CR, 50G 6.1 to 1CR , 50LP 6.6 to 1CR, 520G 7 to 1 CR & 520LP 8.75 to 1CR. If pulling the head find a 520/530 unit & bolt it on after a little valve bowl blending & installing oversize valves. The sparkplug was moved to the head, improves flame travel/power & effiency. Compression is free power as long as engine doesn't detonate. Detonation is caused by overheating, lean mixtures & too low octane fuel. If pump 94 won't stop the knock add xylene (117 octane) to prevent it.
