I recently found a 51 A with a 227 corn picker mounted on it. It also has a hour meter (sorry, can't think of the proper name) mounted above the flywheel. I've never seen one like this. It also has a hydraulic pump with lines running to the steering column just below the wheel. Is this a power assist set-up? Was this part of the corn picker equipment? Thanks.

I believe the hour meter was an after sale type thing, have seen some bulletins or something on putting them on. The hoses going to the steering shaft probably go to a "power steering" setup. most of those were made by Char-Lyn and I have seen a few on JDs but more on IH tractors, they are still made. helped with the steering but put a lot of pressure on worm gears. I would assume that the tractor must also have a live hydraulic pump(between the mag and governor) or a separate hydraulic pump was added for the power steering. I imagine it would have really helped with the picker on it.

It does have a pump between the governor and distributor. It also had a tree grown up through it that has almost grown around the steering wheel. What a shame. Thanks for your reply.
