Who makes new camshafts for a john deere A for pulling? I'm building one and any suggestions would help, thanks.

A cam can make or break a tractor during a pull. The cam should be ground around the other engine components, intended operating RPM, and performance designs. Vintage engine works in Spokane Washington has a power grind for all makes of tractors. A fellow puller has one in his late A. The tractor is very smooth and doesn't sound like it is laboring to work. The cam has more lift and less duration. I bought a cam from Dengler for my G. I had the opportunity to pull another tractor that had a similar setup as my tractor. Roberts carb shop in Spencer Iowa offer grinds for Deere's. Give me an e-mail if need more info.

Roy and Burns, I purchased a cam for my 60 puller from Robert Beaver, and have been very well satisfied. Robert gave me the number of the man who personally would do the grinding, and I told him my set-up and he said he had a grind that would really help. It did, and I am well pleased. These other fellows may do just fine, too. I know this one works very well. Hope this helps. Mike

Hey, I think I remember talking to the same guy, Phil? Both gentlemen are class acts. Did you know that Bob had some recent health issues that are keeping him down some? Good carb man

Hi burns. Yes, it was Phil, and he did a good job. I told him everything I had done, and he said his cam was good for x to x additional h.p., and he was right, and my dyno proved it. And it wasn't just in a "range", either. It helped it from top to bottom. I read where Robert was having health problems. I talked to him once at a show about enhancing the carburetor on my 60 and we got to talking about taking out the choke plates. He said his tests had shown to definitely leave them in (contrary to other opinions) as the plates serve to "straighten" the airflow, making it smoother. Without the plates, the airflow bounces around everywhere, which actually reduces airflow instead. I thought this was interesting. Mike

When I first got my G, it ran like crap. I had our BN at the expo in NY and took the carb along. I gave it to him and he was able to describe "exactly" how my tractor was running and why just by visually inspecting the as is condition.

I am thinking of having my carb worked on at Robert's Carb Repair. I put a new cam in my 50. I do a little pulling...do you think having it ground would make difference? How much would I gain? Any thoughts appreciated
