I'm interested in a 1975 JD 4430 with front wheel assist. Is there any pro's or con's about the FWA?

The front wheel assist will cut down on wheel slip and increase fuel economy when plowing or working ground. A selling point for them was that they saved more fuel than a 2 wheel drive tractor with duels.

The potential benefit does not out weigh the potential cost on this hydraulic driven front wheel drive.

the system utilises electo hydraulic valves. most of the problems are electrical and fairly easy to diagnose. rotary swiches in quad range and synchro range are pretty costy though, and so are the solenoids.

Like G-man said it seems that those who like them really like them and those that don't don't. The HFWA stands for Hyraulic Front Wheel ASSIST and is not to be confused with Mechanical Front Wheel DRIVE. We operate the same system on our 672B and 772BH road graders and I do A lot of hydraulic hose replacement on them. And when they start leaking the price goes up real fast. But it does help on our machines during winter snow plowing with a front plow and side wing plow.

I've been around very few HFWA tractors, but have heard good and bad. On the con side, they're certainly nowhere near as strong or efficient as a true MFWD system, and they're also not cheap to rebuild if there is a failure. You might also make sure your local dealer or whoever does your service work has some experience with them, in case you have problems. On the pro side, they DO add a little pulling power, and will help you get around better in mud or snow.
