A retiring farmer has a 4440 with 2,900 hours; $19,500. No cab; a ROPS and canopy setup. Says it's in great shape. It's about the size I need; looks like a good price, but what do you 4440 experts suggest I pay close attention to when I visit this weekend? Are there variants in this machine that have a big bearing on price I need to know about? Thanks much. It's a big buy for my small operation.

Hello Tom: A 4440 open station is a rare bird around these parts but don't let that scare you. Look at the value of the new generation and two cylinder rare birds. A couple of things to check for on this tractor: ask about how often the coolant has been changed as this will help prevent the cylinder liners from deteriorating, check and see which transmission is in this tractor. It could be the 8 speed power shift, quad range, or possibly syncro range. All these transmissions have their good/bad points but the quad range was the most popular. Have a look at the hyd pump coupler for any looseness easy to fix but easier to do when you are planning to do it. Have a look at the waterpump/fan bearing for play, leakage Run the pto,see that it starts AND stops according to the control lever, try all gears and test diff lock operation. There are probably more thing to look for but these are what come off the top of my head. If those hours are right there should be a pile of life in it yet. I have close contact with one that at 10000 hours has had the turbo and head gasket replaced as "major" service work. This was the big tractor for 2000 acres for a number of years. I have said enough , good luck with your search

Buy one with a cab. Open station canopy tractors are noisy, dirty and extremely hot in the summer.

If that's the right hours it's a good buy,If
you can live without a cab. That usually knocks
off around 5000.I've got one with the same
hours,cab,powershift,I've been offered 30000.
Most of the one's you see advertised cheap
have 3 times those hours.
