Will a 4400 diesel combine engine bolt into a 4010 or 4020 tractor? I have a 4400 that I don't use anymore, and they have really slipped in value the past couple of years. Maybe I could pick up a tractor with bad engine and change them if it would work.

It CAN be done, I've seen photos of experimental 4000 tractors with 329 engines in them, and Deere built something similar in Argentina. However, unless you have access to a machine shop, lots of time and money, this engine swap isn't reccommended. Cheaper and makes more sense to rebuild the engine in the 4010 or 4020 than to do this transplant.

Wi-Red, the 4030 and 2840 used that 329 engine. If you found one of them that was bad, the engine could be adapted pretty easily. Hope this helps. Mike

Wi-Red, according to my copy of the 1999 HOTLINE
FARM EQUIPMENT GUIDE, that combine could have a 239 cid JD engine or a 292 Chevy engine, neither of which would be a swap for the 404 or 380 JD diesels. The 6600 combine had a 404 however.
