What is the correct slow idle speed for a John Deere LA?
I have heard that if the idle speed is set too low that it is possible to damage the impulse spring on the magneto..any truth to that? Thanks.

Dear AWB, I cant answer your question of exact proper idle RPM, but have a couple comments which may be of assistance. When the tractor Wico C and X etc impulse "snap over" mags are turning less than about 250 RPM, thats when that spring has to constantly wind up and trip over which does wear the trip dogs. Once they get up to speed, centrifugal force disengages the trip and spring mechanisms and all that stuff dotn need to work any longer. Therefore, at very low RPM, there is excess wear on them which is only designed for use during the slow hand crank starting period. Also, at very low RPM, the cylinder tops and valve/rocker assembly doesnt get as much oil is another disadvanbtage of long slow idle. I love to idle mine as slow as possible (so the mag trips over) at shows for bragging rights, but it aint good for em. Ol John T
