Cayon, like they said it is a sycro tran... 99% of these tractors had the Perma-clutch them.(A wet type clutch.) But there were a few out there with th dry type clutch.. I have never seen one.. only heard. From the Factory they only had 2 Reverses, but a 3rd could be install.. Actually the 3rd reverse is in the tractor.. just not cut in to the shifter.. I have cut out many of these and it works great.. usually after the shifter is very worn.. it will shift in to the 3rd R position with out cutting.. Good luck with the tractor.

Cayon--twopop was right with a synchro range trans, but the trans only has 2 reverse gears. On older models they had a reverse in the 4-7 range but stopped doing so because the last reverse was to fast, causing clutch slipage when backing up.I'm sure it's just an over thought on his part. I do it all the time!! luckydog

Your 4230 has the synchro range it it for sure. I'm thinking the 4230 was offered with the synchro range only. I don't know for sure, but it seems like I remember it only had the one transmission offered. JDGnut, is this correct, or am I just dreaming again???

Shorty, the 4230 could have had a syncrorange, 8 speed powershift or quad range transmission. Very few 4230's in our area had a syncrorange transmission.

I wonder if they had the quadrange or not. Look at the Nebraska test results on the 4230. They only give a horespower rating for the synchro range tractors in the book I have. I sold new John Deere's for 15 years from 1976 to 1991, and it seems in my mind I remember hearing the 4230's were only synchroes. Someone help me here. I'm not real sure I am right on this one and I am probably not right. You know old Shorty doesn't have much of a memory left. Oldtimers disease has got me I think.

My 4230 has a quad range, You could get all of the trans. in them, syncro, powershift, quad, and even a creeper. Most around here had the quad range.

Woody,
Thanks for your post. I am not sure where I got the idea I had. I know in one book I have they only mention the 4230 synchro range being tested at Nebraska. Thanks again for correcting me.

Shorty,
Proboby the reason that Deere had the Sacrorange tested at Nebraska was to maybe boost the Hp rating on the tractor. I don't know this to be fact, but I've been told that powershifts rob alittle of your Hp, as does the quadrange transmission. The sacrorange does not use any hydrolic power to aid in shifting. Just my conspiracy theory. Greg H.

Greg,
You might be right. The powershift was beleived to pull about 3-5 horsepower I think. They made a test on all of the transmissions in most or all of the other tractors I think. Maybe it was the 4320 that only had the synchro range offered? There isn't a Nebraska test result on the 4320 with powershift either. I know the 6030 was only offered in the synchro range transmission. (I think)

I've never thought about it much, but now that you've mentioned it every 4320 I've ever seen was a sacro range. Perhaps that was the only transmission for that model. The 4230 we've got on the farm has the quadrange transmission, so I know other options existed for it. Later Greg H.

Greg, I appreciate your reply. I just can't keep from thinking one of those 2 tractors, and it must be the 4320 that I was thinking about having only one tranny option. I wish somebody would tell me for sure.
