The only thing that I need to take off this 1950 B is the platform so I can get all the dirt and grease under that cleaned up and some paint. ANy ideas how to get it off?

Thanks,

Karl

Left handed drill bits in a slow speed reversed eelctric drill & plenty of coolant. Heat from friction & the drill bit grabbing will often spin the offending bolt out. If not it's "easy out" time. Have had better luck with the spiral ones than the square units.

Go down and buy four 15.00 snap-on 1\2 wrenchs then weld them on the heads of the bolts you wount have any problem geting them out

Enderes(Sp?) used to make an impact screwdriver, held in ones hand and tapped or pounded with a hammer. They would remove screws that would take the flutes off from an industrial strength Phillips head. I recently saw an illustration of the same thing made by Snap-On. I have forgotten when or where. When I get to my A, I'm either going to borrow my brothers, or get my own. The hammer blow makes sure the bit stays in the slot, causes the bolt to vibrate and the tool provides either clockwise or counterclockwise rotation to the bit. If anyone knows a source for such a tool, I would appreciate the information. I did not find it in a recent perusal of Enderes on line catalog.

Karl,I have used a center punch to get them broken loose. Also I have replaced them with flat head screws (allen heads). If you use good quality ones they wont round out as easy next time. Lastly I would suggest putting some anti-seze on the threads when replacing. Rick

Karl, If you can grind the heads of the bolts off. Then take a torch and heat the bolts cherry red. As soon as you get them hot have a gallon of water handy and pour on the bolts. This will shrink the bolts and they should come out relatively easy. PB Blaster is also a super rust penetrant to also try. Hope this helps, ZEB

Hey Karl, This is supposed to be fun, don't think of it as a "$%(^%#" platform, think of it a a challenging aspect of that magnificent 1950 B and how proud you will be to bet if removed without losing any skin or your dignity. I think a bit of heat and carefully placed dull chisel (wear eye protection!) are good suggestions. Good luck. Bob

that platform is held by the two large beviled headed screws. You can head the screws and maybe that will realease. Also I've used a non sharp chisel and driven srews out. Also have cut platforms then got screws out with wise grips or small pipe wrench. Just some ideals...

I got them off my 530 by mig welding 3/4 inch nuts on top of the screws and just as they began to cool taking a 3/4 inch wrench and breaking them loose. I need to do my B and am wondering if an impact wrench with a homemade tool would work? Any one got thoughts on that?

I know exactly how you feel as I had the same problem on a 720 and 730. The hammer type impact did not work and messed up the slots and I had to grind new slots. The final answer was so easy it was rediculous. I borrowed a driver that fits on a 1/2 inch impact and both bolts were out within aminute.
Be sure you match the driver head close to the slot size.
I agree with the previous suggestion to use allen head tapered capscrews for the replacements
Have fun and let us know how you did it.

weld a nut to the top of the bolt you want out and use aw wranch to get it out. You can cut the nut off if you want to re use that bolt.
good luck!
Mike.
