I have an H john deere the shifter popped up when it was in reverse and seems to be stuck in gear. I jacked up the rear of the tractor and the wheels go in opposite directions. I pulled off the transmission cover to move the gears in nuetral but in all positions the transmission seems to be in gear. Any of you guys out there have any suggestions thank you Ron

Ron, It sounds like the ball and/or socket (cup) is worn on the shifter. Remove the steering wheel and shaft, then the steering pedestal/shifter. This will let you get at the shifting forks. It should be out of gear when all the sliding gears are not meshed with any of the gears on the bottom shaft. The slots on top of the forks should line up. Now take the shifter out of the pedestal by removing the quadrant and boot then the snap ring and spring. Now pull the shifter shaft out the bottom. You will see a ball about 6" up. I bet that ball is worn or the "cup" it sits in. I don't know if you can still get a new ball from Deere. It's held on by a snap ring on bottom. I'd take it to a good welder and let him build it up, contour it and stick her back together. Check to see if the cup is worn. May need some work there. The wheels should turn opposite as the rearend does not have a posi-traction unit. I'm doing this from memory so I hope I got it right. Let us know how it comes out, HMan
