I would really appreciate some help on a 2440 I recently purchased. The serial number is 366082T. Can someone tell me the year and place where it was built? Also, about what does a 2440 weigh?

Sencondly, it doesn't want to start in cold weather (below 50 degrees or so). Thirdly, the pedal-type differential lock on the left side of the tractor is very hard to disengage, once it's been engaged. Fourthly, any ideas where I might find a used fuel tank? Mine leaks diesel fuel.

Thanks in advance!

I have a freind who purchased a 2440 brand new in 1976. It too was very difficult to start at 50F or below. They'd have to plug in the engine heater and use starting fluid. Well.....by 1990 due to lack of anti-freeze changes and other needed maintenence the cylinder sleeves pitted through and leaked anti-freeze in to the oil pan. Tractor went to the dealer for engine rebuild. The dealer said there was now a new design piston available that helps starting. WOW, what a difference. Now the tractor starts down to 30F with out plugging in or using starting fluid. Sooooo o..... I'd say if you have an early production tractor or it does not have the new design pistons in it then you will have this problem.... I'd say go talk to your local or knowledgeable JD dealer to see what you can learn. Don't ask me since I've told you all I know. Good luck!

there is a spring inside that should push the pedal to the 'off' position when rear wheels speed is equal. sometimes you have to 'ride' the pedal in order to make it stay engaged.
the shaft that the pedal is attached to is probably stuck to the housing. try applying penetrating oil and working the pedal.

The main problem with the diff.lock is they don't get used very much on the smaller tractors.
More than likely is is just rusty or froze from
not being used.I've had to heat several if a lot
of oil doesn't work.

Are You using the brakes to disengage the diff lock?

No, I haven't tried hitting the brakes. I've been pulling-up really hard on the hand lever that's attached to the foot pedal for the diff. lock. Does hitting the brakes release the diff. lock? If so, I feel like a fool, but it's great that there's a better way.

I've never ran a 2440 but all other john deere tractors I've ran you use the brakes to disengage the diff lock.

Oaktree, I tried hitting the brakes, but that didn't work.

Any ideas what kind of heater I can use on the engine to help during cold starting? I put a new 900-amp battery in it yesterday and still had to use my booster charger to jump it off. It was about 50-degrees at that time.
