Question on the battery cable diagram for a JD 4010 diesel. It has the dual 12v batteries. Not sure if I have them run right. They have been the way they are for years, but not sure if somehow they have gotten changed when cleaning cables or etc? It does start and run and gen light is not on. But it doesn't seem like it has the starting power that it should for 24v. Am I correct in thinking that they run in series for the starter? Also in my manual they show the grounds going to a platform? By the looks of mine it looks like they to a ground on the battery boxes.
Any and all help would be appreciated. I looked at previous posts but was still unclear on the diagram.
Thanks. craig

if the starter is still a 24 volt system there should be a stud on the rear plate of the starter.the cable which attaches to this stud runs to the right hand side of the tractor,to the + post, ground the - post to the chassis, not the batt.box...the left hand battery is + grounded to the chassis and the - cable is connected to the starter solenoid

I bought a 63 4010 diesel a year ago that started slow and hard, the brushes were bad in the starter. I found myself asking the same question you are as I thought it may have been hooked up wrong since it had two new batteries put in 2 months before I bought it. My dad has a 69 4020 and it has two 12 volts hooked in series to a 24 volt starter. I thought mine should be the same since I figured it should take 24 volts to turn over a bigger tractor like this. Not so, as mine has a twelve volt system with each battery being being grounded seperately under the platform and the positive cables both run to the starter solenoid. I aked a few local farmers about this and they thought 4010 may have come out with both but I know mine had been swithced to 12 V since it had a 12 V alternator on it. If it is a 12 V system I think you're better off as fixing and replacing alternators or starters is cheaper than 24 volt. Cost me 35$ to have a starter shop replace the brushes and she starts great now. If your starter is slow and you decide to take it off will need a little luck with the starter bolt closest to the engine, it's a stinker if it's real tight but a with a swivel on your ratchet she'll come. Hope this helps.
