What would cause the PTO housing on a 1948 Model B to crack. It actually came apart and dropped down several inches taking the seat and battery box with it. We were backing it out of the garage when it happened. My son and I have been restoring this tractor for the last 6 months and we thought we were about finished. As far as I know nothing has been done to the PTO unit and we have not used it. Thanks for any information.

Is it possible that water in the differential housing froze?

The case did not seem to have any water in it and it was being kept inside a heated garage. This seems strange to me
