Which is the best tractor and why. I want you to compare things like front axles, three point etc. and remember WHY.

I have been around both of them on the two ranches i worked on in the last 11 years the IH is hard shifting (may have been a little worn) but nice running but the front ends on the deere is twice as strong as we can carry two round bales without breaking the spindles on our 4430 unlike the IH also the cab is alot nicer and quieter, but the IH seemed easiere to work on.

Ron,
the 1066 is alittle stouter tractor, having a larger turbo-charged engine. Power wise stock I think It's around 125 hp, but the potential for power by turning up the pump is great. The 4430 still only has a turbo-charged 404cid engine, and is not as snappy at the 1066. The 4440 however has a 466 turbo, and I feel out performs the 1066 in stock hp mode. The 1066 has what I feel is an unhandy gear shifts there up beside the steering wheel, but then again I realy like the John Deere quadrange transmissions, and the console shifting. The 1066 has a tendencey to be hard on their Torque amplifiers, and they usually need rebuilt after about 4,000 hours. Talk about an unhandy clutch pack at the bottom of a transmission case. I think it cost around 2,000 to get one of those rebuilt by a technition, and installed properly. 1066's in this area only bring between 7,500, and 12 or 13 thousand, unless immaculate. 4430's bring somewhat more in regards to resale. I guess if I had to sum up my oppinion, the 1066 stripped down makes a better pulling tractor, but the 4430, I feel would make a better farm tractor. If it were me, I'd try to find a 4440, or 4450 with the 466 cid engine, and have a large engine with excellent horse power potential, and a very comfortable farm tractor. Kinda the best of both worlds so to speak. Just my thoughts, and they ain't worth much. Greg H.

the old ih cab is very ROUGH areond the edges.(we had one)but the 1066 will flat work circles around a 4430, a 4440 would be closer but a good 1066 would run it in the ground also.IH tractors always dyno 20-30 hp more than rated "our 1086 dynoed 155hp stock" .the deere will use alot more fuel.if its going to be open station/rops the 1066 is fine.if you want a cab the 1086 is the way to go. i am around tractors all the time we fix them up for local dealers and also farm with ih tractors . the jd is very overrated and here north tx. very overpriced . also the deere is hard to work on and ive worked on alot of them.used the ih is a much better value .just dont get that old 66 series cab (we call them rattle box cabs) a 1066 with a good aftermarket cab would be better.

The 1066 is definately stronger, than the 30 series, but I'd have to argue with you on the 40 series, we've got a 4440 turned up to about 170 Hp and farm it that way every year. You're right about the fuel consumption, but the break down, {not of the engine mind you,I have great respect for the 414}, of transmission, and TA will probobly offset the extra money you put in fuel, plus I think the JD is more comfortable, and again I really like the quadrange transmission. I'd rather farm with the JD, but you are right they are overpriced.

I've a 4430 myself, just for fun. And I work add case ih dealer, the 1066 is easier to work, but the torque amplifier really sucks as also the clutch. When you come above 150hp they will both broke down, especially with tractor pulling. In fact the 4430 doesn't have these problems, i've tuned my 4430 a little bit, and it has around the 300 hp, with all the original parts! And with the tractor pulling it was one of the best in hiss class. They both don't shift so easily, But on the 4430 the clutch is amazing strong. I would never buy a 1066, (I've probably seen to much problems with it).

Around here, Nebraska, resale of a 4030(and cost) is about 20% higher on average than the red one. My friend who farms about 600 acres of row crop and has about every 86 series made and 2 green tractors says he does more little dinky repairs on the red ones and more overall maintenance on the red ones.

Thanks for your opinions. It's sounds like most people have the same opinion of the two tractors, both are good tractors but the 4430 is the one to get to farm with. I asked the same question on the IH board and got thier opinions of the two tractors.
