I installed a block heater in my 60 yesterday, Is O K to leave it pluged in all the time during the winter? It is a 400 watt heater.

I HAVE A JD 630 WITH A JD 35 LOADER WITH A GRAPPLE FORK AND A JD 110 REAR BLADE. I USE FOR FEEDING ROUND BALES AND SNOW PLOWING. IT SITS OUTSIDE. IN WISCONSIN WE HAVE HAD 0 AND BELOW FOR A WHOLE MONTH. I HAVE A 2500 WATT TANK HEATER ON IT AND HAVE HAD IT PLUGED IN ROUND THE CLOCK FOR A WHOLE MONTH AND MY ELEC BILL WENT UP $30. TURN OFF THE HYD PUMP. START TRACTOR AND LET IT WARM UP. THEN SHUT OFF ENGINE THEN TURN BACK ON THE HYD PUMP AND RESTART THE TRACTOR. IN THE WINTER OR IF YOUR BATTERYS ARE LOW IT STARTS SO MUCH BETTER THAT WAY. PUMP IS THE ON OFF LEVER BY YOUR LEFT FOOT WHEN SITTING IN THE SEAT.

Are you sure it's only 400 watts? If it is and if a Kilowatt hour costs you 10 cents, then you'll use roughly $30.00 of electricity each month. I'm too cheap to do that! Now I don't want to make you mad or insult you or your tractor but I do find myself wondering what's wrong with this 60? Here's why.

Back in the late 50's and early sixties we had a series of fairly harsh winters here in Ohio. Several times each winter it was well over 20 below zero F. I recall one week it never got up to 5 below and I'm sure this pales in comparison to some of the guys that live in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin or the thumb but anyway. I know one gentleman (now dead) that kept a 60 in a drive through corn crib with no doors on either end. That 60 never failed to start and many times it was the only thing in the neighborhood that would start! The neighborhood had Minnies, Olivers, AC's, Fergusons, a couple Cockshutts and even a Silver King. At one time or another I think he pulled started them all as well as many of cars and trucks. He claimed that if the 60 got any easier to start, he'd have to shoot it to get it to quit. So why does a 60 need a block heater in South Texas?

Just bein nosey.

Later.

I would think that you could leave it on all the time and not cost too much in electricity. I wonder though why you would need one, I'm in N.E. TX and never knew they existed until I went to Iowa to visit wife's uncle and seen a 110 v cord end sticking out from the lower water hose on one of his tractors.

In South Texas? Why do you need a block heater where it seldom even freezes?

MikeH-Tx This 60 is hard to start when is cold 50 deg and below,When the engine is warm it cranks fine, thats the reason for the heater. I plan on over hauling the engine this spring, and think this will help, ( possible valve problem ) I live south of san antonio and it hardly every freeze here. I have a 50 and it starts fine no matter how cold,... here is the kicker this tractor is even under a shed out of the weather.
