I recently purchased a JD 70 D that runs good, but somewhere in its checkered past someone pulled the pony and tried to use a Delco-Remy electric starer from a diesel truck. They tried to use the ES to drive the pony transmission and broke the transmission. My question, has anyone made this conversion, and how did you do it. I still have the Starter and can make brackets, but any help will be welcome. If you think your post will be too long, email me. Thanks, Moye

I HAVE TWO JD 730D THAT I CONVERTED TO 12 VOLT.YES I SAID 12 VOLT. IT IS TO LONG TO GO IN TO HERE. IT COST ME UNDER $300. PRICE MAY BE MORE NOW AS IT WAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO I DID IT. I CAN SHOW HOW TO REWIRE IT AND YOU MUST GET THE LATE STYLE 730/830 STARTER TRY USED PARTS DEALERS. I KNOW A FACTORY REBUILT PLACE IN ADAMS WISCONSIN THAT THEN CAN REBUILT IT. A 70 OR EARLY 730 STARTER WILL NOT WORK. CALL ME AT 608 654 5417.

Thanks a lot to both of you. Another person gave me the name of Clyde Wilson of Wakeman OH. I think I will give him a call in the morning. I really appriciate the help as I would like to get this thing where it will crank on it's own. My daughter is not always around to pull me, and my wife won't. :) Moye

I think there's a supplier from OH that makes the brackets to convert the pony to electric using big 12v starters. Not sure the price. I saw a 70 converted and one thing I remembered was that the crankcase needs to be vented because the pony took care of it. If not, the tractor will run and spit oily soot and make a mess! The tractor also got a gas hood and looked pretty sharp. Good luck.

Bill.. do you know if it was a gas hood.. or a 720 ele start hood.. the Filler neck is in a different location on the Gas 70's.. The sheet metal is the same on the 720 as the 70.. just painted different.. Later.

If you can find the Electric start bracket for the later 720's and 730's.. they will both right on.. but You will have to find a starter.. I built a bracket for mine.. and used a starter for a tractor like a 4440 or something of that size.. it works good and starts everytime.. good Luck
