I just put new ring in and did the valves, but the tractor won't idle and runs rough. The plugs and plug wires are new and the carb is rebuilt. I was wondering what else I should look at. When I first put it together the mag was out of time but I switched it and it fired right up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wes

Wes, if the plugs and wires are new as you say and the points and condensor are good and set right, are you sure about the timing??? With it running, try retardign or advancing the spark and see how it affects it and look first at the initial static timing (mag snaps over at TDC). It could also be a vacuum leak or a bad carb, even if you say its rebuilt, because the new rings and valves draw a good vacuum which tends to show up leaks more. When you say runs rough, do you mean vibration?? if you had the clutch drive disk off is it back in time with the flywheel ?? Anyway, vacuum leaks or a carb problem comes to mind if shes timed right and you have a good hot spark. How do the power and idle carb adjustments affect its running?? that helps some with diagnosis over the net. Ol John T

First, did you clean out the idle passages in the carb. Link talks about the drill bits you need. Is the float in the carb. set right? Second, did you check the compression after the new rings. That would tell you a lot. Sometimes rings (and maybe the valves) take a while to seat, especially if the block wasn't rebored. Sometimes (gulp) they don't seat at all if the bore is out of round. Some people overlook the simple stuff. Is the gas good?
