Snap Rings

I have a late model B tractor and I am trying to replace the snap rings on the gear shift lever. Is there a special tool I need to spread the snap ring in order to put it on the shaft. The snap ring is very ridgid and I am having a hard time trying to get it on. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've used small flat end screwdrivers, but the expander type tool would be better. I know that you need to clean the groove really good, I know the bottom ring is locked by the ball coming over it, but the top isn't. Good luck....

I just bought a Channel-Lock Snap Ring Pliers at Farm and Fleet. C.a. $17. I got the front wheel off from the 111 to fix a flat. I had another 10 years ago, which I threw in the waste basket after the first time I tried to use it.If you want a good one I would expect to look up the Snap-On dealer.
