I have a 47 B (pressed frame) that has Trasmission
problems. I can't figure this out, and would like some input please. What happens is that 95% of the time it wouldn't take off in 6-5-3 all it does is spin the clutch like it's not even in gear. Then you go to 1-2-4-R and move just a few inches and try it again. Then it is fine, until I snap the clutch back and I have to try it all over again. Sometimes it takes a few time before it goes. Lately, when it does go it pops out off gear, and back to square one. Your input would be greatly used.

When you move the gear shift lever through the cross over slot from the lo to hi sides of the quadrant, do you feel any detents? If you don't feel detents (they're only at the extreme right & left ends of the crossover slot) you either have a broken or seriously rusted detent spring, ball or plunger on the hi lo shifter or the shifter shaft is loose.

When you move the gear shift through this cross over slot, you're doing the same thing you did on the older B's when you moved the "other, HI LO gearshift". If the detent is not working, the tractor can slide into the neutral between the lo & hi positions.

If the shaft is loose, the shaft, shifter and sliding gear can all very easily move out of the HI range position in particular.

Park it. Shift it into 4th gear (makes reasssembly easier) then remove the steering wheel, steering shaft, steering pedestal, shifter quadrant and top cover of the transmission as a unit & take an inspection tour. Since your trouble appears related to HI & LO, pay particular attention to the "odd" shifter. It is taller and towards the front of the tractor from the other three shifters. Don't keep using it as is or you'll soon (if not already) have GEAR trouble too!

Let us know what you find.

Later.

I had a similar problem with my '51 B. Except mine would not go into gear at all. Basically what I did was take the pedistal off and the shifter housing and clean it out real good inside the case there and it works better. Might be a quick fix for now though!

From the sound your problem, most all old JD tractors have the same ailment. My 620 does the same and a friend's 40 also. I have been told by a retired JD mechanic the shifter itself could be worn, or even scarier is the dreaded worn shifting forks. I'd give her a good cleaning and keep a can of WD-40 close.
