Well, we finally got the block and head back from the machine shop. They turned the crank, shaved the head, complete valve job and put in new freeze plugs. Also, put in new sleeves, pistons, rods, and mains. Thank God no cracks in the block and everything looks good. We are taking the block over to the deere dealer to put in the bushings for the govenor(plus rebuild). We are also going to let them check the flywheel and clutch. Since as you correctly stated that the engine is a 420, we are not sure of the correct flywheel and clutch. Want to make sure we are mating the correct parts. Any thoughts or comments are most appreciated!

Lee, sounds like you are doing it right. When putting it back together fill the hydraulic pump on the front of the engine with fluid, those pumps sometimes have a hard time self priming. While it is apart pull the clutch linkage,& throw-out bearing fork,& check the pivot pins & holes for wear, those pivot points have a habit of wearing oblong.

How did the cam & lifters measure for wear? Able to reuse them or had them reground. If reusing them make sure each lifter goes back into it's origional bore. Which pistons did you go with?

The cam and lifters were okay. We used John Deere parts. We figure in for penny in for pound and do it right the first time around! Block work and parts just a litter over $1000.00.
