John, I wouldn't worry so much about the tractor not having a differential lock. I'm not saying I never use mine, but what I've found is that when the tractor is pulling down, that both wheel will more or less pull together, or serge{spin} in alteration. When this happens it will give you sort of a rocking motion from left to right. you can always use your brakes to even things out. On a 3020 gas I wouldn't change it too much. Right now it wouldn't be worth the money, but later on the tractor that is left more original will be worth more as a collector. The only thing I don't like about a 3020 gas is that they seem to use a lot of gas. The one I operated , which was in good shape used more gas than my 66 4020 gas. If you have a 540 rpm shaft it will have the comventional spline spacing. If the splines are smaller and very close together, than you have a 1000 rpm. Then again you may have both. Usually you see the 540 in the tractor, and the 1000 in it's storage area above the PTO area, but beneth the top link area of the tractor. To change from 540 to 1000 point the tractor down hill, take out the 1000 rpm shaft from it's storage area, then take a pair of pliers, and remove the snap ring aroung the base of the exposed 540 shaft, and pull the shaft backwards. then before two much transmission fluid leaks out shove the 1000 RPM shaft in, and reinstall the snap ring that holds it in. These are good tractors once debugged, so have fun, and good luck. Sorry about the long post. Later, Greg H.
