I am trying to take the clutch off the end of the crankshaft so I can take off the first reduction gear to get a new fork in the tranny, the problem is that the balancer I guess it is called, the thickest piece inside the clutch there, will not come off. I watched the video Engine Rebuild For John Deere Tractors from J & D productions and they said to use a puller. I did, and it broke, yet it is still on there. ANy suggestions?

Thanks,

Karl

I am not sure what is being discussed here. If we are talking about removing the drive discs, please refer to LUCKYDOG. He is right, there are two little bolt holes and you use the bolts as discribed. If we are trying to pull the whole pulley, then that is something else and I would like to know how to get that off myself as I need to replace the clutch side crankshaft oil seals on a 730D and have been so far unsuccessful in more than removeing the driving discs and clutch facings. Karl,

My dad and I made a puller that works pretty well for pulling the drive disks off our G's. Basically it's pretty simple. We used a piece of 1/2 inch flat stock, about 2 inches wide and 12 inches long. Drilled 3 holes in it. 1/2 diameter. The outside holes line up with the holes in the disk. The middle hole lines up with the crank. Used 8 in. bolts on the outside holes and about 6 in bolt in center hole. Put a nut on the center bolt so you don't mess up threads in crank. Put nuts on outside bolts, and start tighting thinks up. Use good grade bolts and really put the torque on them. While you have them tight apply some oil to the disk and lightly tap the center bolt. This always does the trick and is strong and cheap. When you go back with the drive disc, save yourself some headaches in the future. Put a little Anti-seize on the crank splines.

JDF, The G is a different animal from the B so a big puller like you made is great for it, but on ALL models I don't think anti-sieze is a good idea on the splines. You want to get the drive disc as tight as possible when reassembling it and you want NO chance of it working loose, so this is one place anti-sieze is not recommended. Those discs and crankshafts are hard to find and expensive, let's all try to preserve the good ones. LUCKYDOG is right on on the proper way to pop off the B drive disc. Bob

Carl,I had to use a red wrench to melt the clutch drive disc into three pieces.NOTHING else worked on my 70,but if you have to get that drastic,be careful not to melt your crankshaft splines.Good luck,Jack(TN).

Karl-- I think the balancer you are talking about is called the clutch driver. Around the crankshaft there are 2 slotted holes (if they are not busted). Take 2 5/8 bolts with square nuts that are about 4in long, put the nuts on the bolts, then slide the nuts in the slotted holes, then tighted the bolts ( one side then the other equal). Keep tightening until the clutch driver pops off. Works everytime. Hopes that helps.luckydog

I wish I could offer an easier solution, but I think you need a bigger puller. If you beat on anything with a hammer, you may bust the disk. I don't think it can take much abuse. Maybe some penetrating oil would loosen it up some. A tough puller is what I used on my "A".

No worries about breaking the disk because as I said it is broken. If I had a bigger puller I probably wouldn't be able to get it inside the clutch housing. Will try penetrating oil...

Thanks,

Karl

Karl, I recently went into the tranny of my 50 B and I had to use a HUGH puller to get the clutch plate off. I had to pull it all the way off with the puller.

Try this and let me know if I can be of more help.

Put your puller on there tighten er down and then get the torch and heat up the crankshaft end.I use a small puller nothing fancy...and she will slide off with a lil heat
