JD G Over haul engine 2 years ago ,Rebuild carb ,rebuilt head,( has the old flat head on the tractor F486R} Engine runs hot 200 was told this was common with this head ????I have the old cast pistons and wanted to keep them so I just installed new rings and honed the cylinders.Ran the tractor on a old batch corn dryer for a load serval hours, more than once.Have plow a little with it and ran a JD 30 combine this fall to show grandson how we used to do it.When I start the tractor it smokes like a steam engine, then stops after a while.I turn off the gas every time and run tractor to drain the carb. The oil is not over full.Am I going to have to rebore and install new pistons .I have to get this fixed before repainting this winter.

Robert, I'm not looking at the R&R manual,ok? But I just finished a 50 and there is an adjusting screw that sets position of the slider shaft which sets the position of the gears. My guess, and I did a G a couple of years ago, is that the adjusting set screw that is under the 1st reduction gear cover and is not allowing the proper engagement of the gears. E- mail me back at whwend@solutia.com and I'll check further.

Robert if you want to keep the cast iron pistons, sleeve engine to fit the pistons. The aluminum pistons and the flat head should give you around fifty five horsepower, you want be able to run on kerosene anymore if you change pistons. The F486 head is a dandy some puller would be glad to swap you a F551 for it which is whats suppose to be on it,if you get the antifreeze mixed to rich that will cause you to overheat. Good luck
