I've heard that some 820s and I think 830s have a black instrument panel instead of green. Why is that? Is one worth more than the other?

the black dash was '58 models that had increased horsepower to just over 75 hp. there are very desirable tractors.

Since you asked why they were changed to black here is what I`ve always been told. The black dash reduces glare from the working lights at night making the gauges easier to see and read. Kind of the same reason the combine reels were changed from yellow to black. If you`ve ever watched a yellow one "flash" in the dark you`d paint your black too! Happy New Year, Scott

The black dash started in the 1958 year of the 20 series. Some other small changes were made at this time, but I don't remember what they were with looking them up.

When the 1957 model year ended, JD made several improvements to the 20 series tractors, for the 820, it meant an increase in hp from the 67 or so that was shared with the previous "80" to aproximately 75. Also, the pony motors recieved minor improvements. They changed the paint scheme at this time from a green dash to a black dash. Black dash indicates a tractor produced for the 1958 model year. Jim
