What is your favorite JD tractor? and why?

Mine currently is a JD 60 new enough to have many great features yet still on the older antique side, plus enough power for everything I need.

Your turn! :)

Karl

Has to be a 730D. Just love the sharp snap of those injector pins (almost a knock). Has to have a narrow front, that's the way we had them in the corn belt (had to mount those pickers). I've spent more time on a 720 gas and have actually come to like operating a 20 series better than a 30, but I love the styling of the 30's. Flat top fenders, 3-pt., and dual hydraulics are icing on the cake!

730 gas on narrow front, fresh high altitude pistons, new clutch, will 'walk the dog'; blew a gas 560 AWAY, both were pullin a 13 foot disk (BTW my disk was a JD BW, his was an Int'l, the JD was a lot heavier and goin a lot deeper).

Hey,
The first JD 2-cyl i drove was a 430W. Great tractor with the low to the ground stance and live pto and live hyd. Good for mowing a yard or raking hay!

Another tractor I like is my Mint '37 B short frame. Starts on the first spin COLD EVERY TIME!!! Great parade tractor with the uneven beat of the motor due to the magneto. Also its small enough to be pulled behind a 1/2 ton truck!

Finally, the 530 JD IS THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM TRACTOR EVER MADE! Roll-o-matic front end, 3pt, float ride seat. This is the first hand clutch JD i ever drove. WHAT A RIG!!! I have pulled many a wood trailer loaded to the hilt up a hill that would stop other tractors in their puddles of oil. Even with the oval mufler, still has a good powerful sound. Very agile in the woods or in a field! Easy on gas and will pull 3 plow bottoms better and faster than ANY LATE STYLED A JD OR FARMALL M!!!!!

Hmmmmm ..... So many Deere's, so little time and MONEY!
chaz
aka: i wish i could afford my friends 530 "Tractor Boy!" (heheh)

I'm a sucker for big bores and slow rpms.
So, at 501 c.i. the model "D" gets my vote.
Happy New Year!

I was raised on the old unstyled D's. They have a special place in my heart but the 80, 820, and 830's are really good tractors as far as I'm concerned. The 4020 was the best tractor ever built I think.

My dad bought a new 4020D in 1970. It was his main farm tractor for 21 years. As a kid, I spent countless hours on it ahead of a peanut picker. The engine was overhauled once in the 80's. I still have the tractor; use it every day during the winter for feeding cattle. It still runs and drives like a dream.

I've got a 60S that I kinda like, too. And a 50. And an A...

My 730 pony start Diesel with flat top fenders and square tube wide front is my favorite. I think it's the best looking tractor ever made in addition to being fuel efficient, powerful, and the last two cylinder produced. My second favorite is my 1947 "GW" - best sounding tractor ever made!

Great question!

I guess I'm giving multi answers as I like most all of them. As far as an impressive beast a 730 hi-crop. Beast #2 would be an R on steel. Un-styled I guess would be a GP, cute and love that flat head sound, like a big bore Harley. As far as what I myself own, my '58 420 hi-crop.

Any two cylinder tractor driven by Karen or her fun loving sistor & friends. Seriously, any numbered series gas ,standard or rollomatic row crop with power steering, live pto, threepoint hitch for odd jobs. Diesel pony start for something to run all day. Not fussy for the looks of a wide front axle rowcrop, used to standards around here. Can't beat that ground pounding two cylinder sound. For regular farm work as a primary tractor any propely sized & optioned for the task Deere is good for me.

I'd love to have a restored JD 730 diesel with flat top fenders and the headlights mounted on the under side of the fenders. I always thought this model was a very handsome tractor. I'd love to have one to run in parades.

My favorite at this time is the little H I have sitting in pieces all over my shop and in the shed. You gotta love something that you had to drive 800 miles for, spend 3 hours winching it on to a trailor in the pouring rain (because it's stuck and doesnt run), drive 800 miles back, and spend another month tearing it into pieces so you can spend hundreds of dollars to restore it to it's original condition, just because you like the sound of the old 2 poppers! Did I mention my wife thinks I'm nutz!!! Ain't Old Tractors Great!!!

I have four 60's, and an AR, which is almost one, and they are probly my favourites....of course, as one person said, my favorite on any given day is the one I'm working on, the R is fun to play locomotive with, and the 50's pretty agile, but on that cold day with the north wind, nothing beats the 4760! Guess we'd all have different ideas if we had to earn a living with these ole girls! And, Karl, it looks like you've just proven something I've believed for a long time....everyone has their tractor, and every tractor has someone who wants it, somewhere out there!

Hands down,It has to be my 830 Rice Special, which is scattered in a thousand parts in my barn currently.I also have a '49 R and several G's which I love deerely, but the 830 is the epitome of the "Popping Johnnys".Many elder Rice Farmers in my part of Texas still attest to it's strength and durability.

I hear you truck. My father-in-law had two tractors after he retired and was still healthy. A 39 JD B and a late 40's? Farmall M. (this was before he was my father-in-law). My wife loved that M, but it was sold with the farm, and was too big for us to move around with at the time. We did, however, keep the B in the family, and now is in my garage, where I can play with it.

My favorite among my two cyl collection is my 830 electric. I use it in the county "out of field" tractor pull @10,000# and it helps during the spring rush, hauling the homemade dump box for stone picking and occasionally disking with a 15' disc. Its ease of starting and size help make it my favorite.

As a kid, I started driving a 630 that we used for hauling silage wagons. After we added newer tractors and larger wagons, the 630 was put on rake duty or stored. I got pretty good at shifting on the fly, wagons loaded or empty. When I started to buy tractors, the "R" class became my favorites.

For the newer machines that we own, the 8100 has to be it. The view from the seat is great! The newer style cab lets you get in and out a lot easer. But hey,.... this is about the older ones, so the 830's my favorite. Bill

Karl, Good question, My favorite John Deere is my '52 A because it is the only one of my 6 that ran when I bought it and I drove it home. I use it at our little plow day every April and around the farm and I try to fix at least one more thing every year, I think my 46 GM might take over as favorite if I ever get it restored and running, I tend to like the one that is under me and making music best. Think I might agree with Gord about the R if I was ever lucky enough to run one. I think all who answered are pretty lucky to have one or more of these great machines. Bob

Gotta be the "R" When I first moved here my neighbor had an R on rice tires and he used to pull an 18 foot double offset disker and I could hear that tractor for two miles when it was in full snort pulling that.
I used to be a machinist for Northern Alberta Railways and when I left that job to move here I missed the power of the locomotives and that R was the next best sound (must be a TIM TAYLER thing) so I got one at an auction and haven't looked back since. Now have four and lookin for more!!

I presently have a 40, I do like it but the 720D with pony motor I had to sell with the farm, (no tractor no sale) was a jewel that worked as hard as anything I have ever used. I started on crawlers in WA in 52, for 20+ yrs in the military I worked for farmers just so I could be around the farms. I have used many tractors, old and new, big and small, that 720 was the best. (I have been trying to buy it back but no luck).

I have a 51G with live hyd. and a 630. The 630 is like a pocket in a shirt, with independent 3pt and live hyd. I use it year round from making hay to moving big round bales, mowing to tractor pulling. Starts every day of the year no matter how cold it gets. The G is a very strong running tractor, has a loader on it and also use it alot. The only thing I miss on the 630 is the power of the G. PS, they both have new motors in them. Would not part with either. luckydog

My favorite is the unstyled D. Reason? I like the burly, square look. The sound is great.

The real reason-my family has two, a 1928 D, and a 1938 DI (industrial, but basically the same). These were the first old John Deeres I ever drove. I must admit, though, I've never used one of the Ds for work (have only used the J.D. B for s*** spreading). I don't know if my opinion would be the same if I plowed all day with the '28!

I have a 50 that I use for mowing and I really like it. It's light, has good hydraulics and powersteeing and works great with my mower. On the other hand, I used to work for a farmer who had a 4840 and an 8640 4WD. I loved driving those brutes with 30 Ft. wide equipment. It was really nice harvesting in the fall with a strong north wind and sitting in that warm cab. I was spoiled for a time.
